Strawberry fever in Hamburg: Jella is planning exciting summer adventures!
Today, July 15, 2025, the warm season is in full swing and the strawberry season has the region firmly in its grip. Jella, the 15-year-old daughter of a colleague from our editorial team, has already made her summer vacation plans. Open-air cinemas, night flea markets and a strawberry picking trip are on her list. But the strawberry hype also has its downsides: Many fields have already been harvested and the best places for picking are in demand.
Strawberries are still ripening at the Bernekehof in Barsbüttel and the farm has a cozy café. Meanwhile, at the Lohbrügge farm in Reinbek you can discover Tayberries, a cross between raspberries and blackberries. But be careful, the fields there are currently closed. Jella decided to pick her strawberries at Hof Glantz, which operates several fields around Hamburg and updates information about it daily on its website. The price for the sweet fruits is 7.40 euros per kilo – a small price for great enjoyment!
Picking your own strawberries – tips for enthusiasts
This year, strawberries are characterized by delayed ripening due to the lack of sunny days and cool temperatures. The first fields opened their gates to self-pickers last weekend, with the majority following in the coming days. If you're quick, you have the opportunity to enjoy the fresh fruit straight from the field, which is the highlight of the season for many hobby gardeners.
For those who want to try it themselves, there are some helpful tips. Strawberries should be picked with the stalk on, and it's worth visiting the back of the fields too. It's best to go early in the morning to extend the shelf life of the berries. The staff can also give valuable advice on where to find the most beautiful fruits.
- Optimalen Erntezeitpunkt abwarten
- Erdbeeren mit Stiel pflücken
- Früchte in kleinen Mengen ernten
- Frühe Morgenstunden nutzen für die Ernte
- Bei Bedarf Fragen an das Personal stellen
The demand for local strawberries is high and over 100,000 tons fewer strawberries are harvested in Germany than are consumed. In supermarkets, the berries often come from countries such as Spain, Italy or the Netherlands. These are sometimes harvested before they are fully ripe, while the local berries are only picked when they are in optimal condition and thus develop a much better aroma.
Current events in Hamburg
While strawberries are trendy, there are also other topics that concern the population in Hamburg. An application that will help victims of domestic violence to get out of joint tenancy agreements more easily is currently being discussed. This morning there was also an important rally at the Sternschanze school to commemorate the deportation of Jewish people. In the port, two people were slightly injured in a collision between a barge and a container ship.
Whether in the strawberry field or when dealing with social issues – the summer of 2025 has a lot in store in Hamburg. If you want to pick the sweet fruits of summer yourself, you should set off before the fields are empty. Not only Jella wants a nice time picking strawberries, but also many who want to experience this activist summer activity as enjoyment and leisure time.
