JAZZ OPEN HAMBURG: A festival celebrating 30 years of passion and music!
On the weekend of August 30th and 31st, 2025, the time had finally come: Hamburg celebrated 30 years of Jazz Open Hamburg, the city's most traditional jazz festival. Jazz lovers came together on the popular concert shell site in Planten un Blomen Park to enjoy two days of music and celebrate the Hanseatic city's lively jazz culture. The festival, founded by a group of passionate jazz musicians in 1996, has evolved over the years into a platform for local talent and international stars.
As NDR reports, the focus of the festival is on free open-air concerts. This tradition attracts around 10,000 visitors every year who enjoy the special atmosphere in the park. The first line-up in 1996 was already promising and included greats like Lucas Lindholm, Dick Griffin and Gunter Hampel. Has anything changed about that? Not at all! This year the stages will once again shine with a mix of current Hamburg bands, new talent and renowned international artists.
Special moments and changes
The festival witnessed many unforgettable moments. One highlight, for example, was an improvisation by a bird during a performance, which caused a stir in 2012. Notable performances in the festival's history included artists such as Lee Konitz, Omar Sosa and Roger Cicero. The organization by the Jazzbüro Hamburg e.V. ensures that the festival always provides new musical impulses. Since 1997, the office has been responsible not only for the planning but also for the implementation of the festival.
The festival is financed by the Hamburg Cultural Authority, which in this case shows a good hand. The NDR Jazz editorial team has established itself as a partner and ensures that the best concerts of the year are broadcast on NDR Kultur. Even some adjustments due to the corona pandemic did not affect the festival spirit. In 2021 the event was moved to HALLE 424 and streamed live, while the return to the park in 2022 brought back a sense of normality.
A look into the future
This year, the organizers are not only pleased about the 30th anniversary, but also about the presentation of the Hamburg Jazz Prize to the talented Tilman Oberbeck, which took place as part of the festival.
