Research partnership: TU Darmstadt and Tongji University strengthen innovation!

On June 11th and 12th, 2025, the Research Days at the Technical University of Darmstadt focused entirely on international collaboration and innovative ideas. The event offered both aspiring scientists and experienced experts from Tongji University in Shanghai the opportunity to discuss current research topics and promote new partnerships. The topics ranged from Future Transportation to Smart Materials, which underlined the commitment of both universities. Particularly noteworthy is the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the automotive sector, which further consolidates the cooperation between the two educational institutions. According to TU Darmstadt, the strategic partnership serves as an important bond between the universities.

A festive reception in the Lichtenberghaus on the occasion of this cooperation attracted numerous guests, including Professor LI Keping from Tongji University and Professor Emeritus Gerhard Sessler. In his speech, Vice President Walther highlighted the important role of many pioneers from both institutions and thanked them for their contribution to the sustainable development of the partnership.

Growing relationships in the automotive industry

The important event in Darmstadt is in line with the latest developments in the automotive industry, especially in an international context. On May 4, 2024, another MoU was signed at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition to strengthen cooperation between China and Germany in cross-border data transfer. This shows that both countries want to maintain exchanges in times of economic uncertainty and looming tariffs on electric vehicles. According to Global Times, experts have expressed hope that these initiatives could lead to closer economic cooperation.

Volker Wissing, the German Minister for Digital and Transport, emphasized the outstanding importance of cross-border data flow and the application of artificial intelligence in this context. Despite the challenges posed by possible tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, both sides expressed willingness to maintain effective dialogues to create a fair business environment.

International collaboration as the key to innovation

International cooperation in science and research is essential for the innovative strength of Germany and Europe. According to BMBF, the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space emphasizes that such partnerships are crucial in order to meet global challenges and master new pressures for transformation. Long-term collaborations are planned with countries that share the principles of human dignity and human rights.

In particular, cooperation with countries in the EU, the USA, Canada and the Asia-Pacific region are the focus of the ministry's efforts. In 2022, the BMBF invested over 1.3 billion euros in international projects and funded a total of 2,278 projects. This is not just about research, but also about the exchange of ideas, values and perspectives that are beneficial for everyone involved.

The Research Days in Darmstadt and the latest developments in the automotive industry impressively illustrate that the path to an innovative future can only be paved through joint efforts and foreseeable partnerships.
