Ice cream price shock in Hesse: additional costs cause outrage!
The 2025 ice cream season has begun and with it the discussions about the prices for the popular ice cream scoops. An ice cream parlor in Hesse is currently causing a stir: additional fees have been set for various extras, such as a spoon or a waffle. A price of 1.50 euros per ball is quoted, but things like a cup or a straw cost an additional 50 cents. Such regulations find both approval and outrage in the community, as Merkur reports. While some users consider the step to be understandable and environmentally friendly, others see it as a “violent customer scam”.
The price development of ice cream scoops in Germany is particularly exciting: the average price in 2025 will be 1.81 euros, which means an increase of 5.2% compared to the previous year. In fact, the price increased by 43.5% between 2018 and 2024, while general inflation was only 22% during this period. Prices are particularly high in large cities, as operating costs rise sharply due to energy and personnel. Energy consumption in ice cream parlors is particularly high, which is of course also reflected in the final price, confirms information from Tagesschau.
The causes of the price increase
Rising raw material prices are not making life any easier for ice cream parlors. The import prices for cocoa beans have more than doubled in the last few months; manufacturers who rely on high cocoa contents and have to adapt their recipes accordingly are particularly affected. ZDF explains that a ton of cocoa can cost up to 12,000 euros in 2024 - that's six times as much as a few years ago. This is forcing some ice cream parlors to adjust quality or further increase prices.
It's not just the coffee cup that has become more expensive; wages have also increased. Today, minimum wages and collective agreements apply, which means a significant increase in costs for ice cream parlors, which are often family-run. In the past, relatives and friends often helped in the ice cream parlors, which saved further costs. Now the operators have to pay in full - and that is reflected in the prices.
Eating ice cream as a luxury
Especially in tourist strongholds and city centers, ice cream balls can cost up to 3 euros. Many families increasingly see a visit to the ice cream parlor as a small luxury, while the founding history of many ice cream parlors, such as the traditional Unbehaun ice cream parlor in Düsseldorf, has hardly changed. Homemade ice cream has been available there for almost 120 years - currently for 70 cents per scoop in a cone and 90 cents in a cup.
The price range for ice cream scoops is enormous today. While in the 60s and 70s people paid between 10 and 50 pfennigs for ice cream, today the prices are structured completely differently. Depending on the location and quality of the ingredients, prices vary between 1 and 3 euros. Surveys by Coupons.de show that the average price in Germany is 1.81 euros, while lower prices often apply in rural regions.
In summary, it can be said that the ice cream culture in Germany has changed: from a small snack device as a child's dream to an experience that many people associate with the feeling of treating themselves to something special. In the context of the rising cost of living, you just have to have a good knack for getting your ice cream trip within your budget.
