German Orchestra Competition 2025: Top-class music festival!
From June 14th to 18th, 2025, Wiesbaden, Mainz and Ingelheim will become the heart of the German amateur orchestra world, as the German Orchestra Competition (DOW) opens the doors to the best musicians in the country. How hr2 reports, this is the first in-person event in nine years, and all music lovers can look forward to it!
This year an impressive 98 orchestras are taking part in the competition, for which a total of €70,000 in prizes will be awarded in 16 categories. The event is financed by the federal government, as well as the states of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, which underlines the rank and importance of the event. Also represented for the first time is the transverse flute ensemble “flautastique” from the Montabaur State Music High School, which achieved the highest number of points in the state competition. Over 4,000 musicians are expected in total, including symphony and chamber orchestras, wind orchestras and even big bands.
A colorful supporting program
In addition to the competition itself, there is a varied supporting program that certainly has something in store for every music lover. Susanne Pütz and Maximilian Peter will report live from the competition, speak to the organizers, jury and participants and thus capture the atmosphere of this special event. SWR emphasizes that the competition entries are public and free of charge, while the evening concerts and the opening concert charge admission.
Special musical events
On June 28th there will be a very special performance in Wiesbaden: The Schiersteiner Kantorei and the baroque ensemble La Vivezza present Francesco Durante's “Lamentationes”. A copy of the historical sheet music was made for this event - a historical moment that is rounded off with an interview with Clemens Bosselmann, the director of the Schiersteiner Kantorei. The anticipation for this premiere is great and promises to captivate the audience.
In addition, on german-orchestra-competition.de pointed out that the nominations for the DOW 2025 were made on December 12, 2024. The participants have to qualify through state competitions, which further increases the exclusivity and high status of the competition.
A farewell to a legend
Amidst all the anticipation for the event, there is also a touch of sadness. On June 5, 2025, Prof. Hubert Buchberger, an outstanding German violinist and conductor who shaped Hessian musical life and founded the Buchberger Quartet in 1974, died. His tireless commitment to music and his many years of teaching at the Frankfurt University of Music will not be forgotten. hr2 plans to commemorate him by presenting works by Joseph Haydn and W.A. Mozart will be played by the Buchberger Quartet and other ensembles.
For all music enthusiasts in Cologne and far beyond, the German Orchestra Competition 2025 promises to be an unforgettable experience! We are looking forward to a musical tour of discovery that puts many talents in the spotlight and celebrates the love of music.
