Frankfurt is looking for the new wine queen: who will wear the crown?

Frankfurt am Main is once again looking for a wine queen to represent the city and its traditional wine-growing region. A wine queen has graced the cityscape since 2017, and a new successor will soon be elected. The application deadline for the position is July 31st and the decision is under the care of the Tourismus+Congress GmbH Frankfurt am Main (TCF).

The current incumbent, Lena Roie, will give up her crown and has already expressed her ambitions to apply for the position of Rheingau Wine Queen. Lena comes from a family of showmen in Frankfurt, trained to become a sommelier and has a good knack for wine. It is rooted in the festival culture of the Rhine-Main region and runs its own wine stand. Their upcoming public appearance will take place on August 1st at the opening of Mainfest.

The Lohrberger slope and the wine culture

Frankfurt's municipal winery and the 1.3 hectare vineyard on Lohrberg, also known as “Lohrberger Hang”, are true treasures of the city. The renowned Riesling “Frankfurter Lohrberger Hang” is produced here, and around 10,000 bottles of the fine wine come onto the market every year. This wine not only represents local quality, but is also part of the national wine tradition that is deeply rooted in the Rheingau.

The Rheingau is considered the most important wine-growing region in Germany, even though it only contributes a small proportion of wine production in terms of quantity. The climatic conditions on the Rhine, combined with moisturizing soil, create ideal conditions for the vines, especially for Riesling, which takes up almost 80 percent of the cultivated area here. The products from this area are known for their elegant, harmonious character and fruity taste.

The requirements and process of the election

Anyone who wants to succeed Lena must be of legal age and have a real passion for wine. Commitment, specialist knowledge, as well as a warm and communicative approach are further requirements for the office of Frankfurt Wine Queen. The choice is made through membership in the Rheingau Winegrowers Association, which ensures the high standard and quality expected from it.

The crown that the wine queen wears when she takes office was designed in 2017 and symbolizes the connection between big city and rural viticulture. It is made of silver and gold-plated, decorated with elements based on the Frankfurt skyline and the Roman, surrounded by vines that represent the tradition of wine-growing vino-culinario explained.

Now is the opportunity for anyone interested to become part of this exciting tradition. Anyone who sees themselves as a possible successor can contact us at visitfrankfurt.travel/weinkoenigin Apply and take advantage of the opportunity to personally experience the ambience of the Rheingau.
