Frankfurt's Belvederchen: New roof garden invites you to linger!
The new Belvederchen is here! On July 1, 2025, the lovingly reconstructed roof garden in the Golden Scale House was opened. The people of Frankfurt can now enjoy a wonderful view of the imposing cathedral and the surrounding roofs of the old town. In the past, the so-called Belvederchen offered many Frankfurters relaxation and enjoyment until the 20th century, before they were largely destroyed by air raids in 1944. Citizens and visitors are now enjoying this little green paradise even more, which is also part of the regenerated historic cityscape. As rheinmainverlag.de reports, the roof garden is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free and registration is not required.
The Golden Scale House, which was built in 1619 by a Dutch merchant family, forms the framework for the Belvederchen. This beautiful complex can be reached via the stairwell or the elevator of the Stoltze Museum. Visitors are asked to treat the surfaces and installations with consideration - both the stairs and the stay in the roof garden are at their own risk. However, tours of the House of Golden Scales must be booked in advance.
A view of the old town
Speaking of the old town: Frankfurt has invested a lot in renovation and reconstruction in recent years. Between the cathedral and the Romans, the historic old town now shines in new splendor. The extensive construction work is almost complete and the scaffolding is expected to come down in about four weeks. A total of 35 houses were rebuilt, including 15 as reconstructions, such as the “Green Linde” and the “Old Department Store”, which received a baroque ground floor. This shows [bild.de](https://www.bild.de/regional/frankfurt/frankfurt-am-main/frankfurts-altstadt-erstrahlt-in-altem- Glanz-52546596.bild.html) that not only historical models are taken into account, but creative accents are also set with crooked facades like the “Little Birdsang”.
The official opening of the new old town is planned for 2018 - and the anticipation for this historic moment can already be felt. Work is also underway on the artistic design of the buildings, as shown by the 21-year-old church painter Franziska Schuchmann, who is currently painting the wooden gables of the “Golden Scales”.
Reconstruction of the Long Franz
Another exciting project is the reconstruction of the roof of the “Langer Franz” town hall tower. The Frankfurt magistrate has already cleared the way for this. Mayor Mike Josef (SPD) sees the tower as an important landmark of the city, which should now get its old roof back. However, the approval of the city council is still required for the construction and financing template, as [t-online.de](https://frankfurt.t-online.de/region/frankfurt-am-main/id_100693858/frankfurt-dach-des-rathausturms-langer-franz-soll-wiederaufmachen- Werden.html) reports. So far, the Brückenbauverein Frankfurt has collected over 1,200 individual donations in a fundraising campaign that has been running since 2022, far exceeding the original goal of one million euros.
The “Lange Franz” has a special symbolic meaning for many Frankfurters and this reconstruction not only marks a return to the city’s roots, but also strengthens the sense of local identity and democracy.
Whether Belvederchen, the recultivated old town or the “Lange Franz” – Frankfurt is investing in its history and future. It will be exciting to see how the city will develop!
