Anniversary celebration: Schmidt's stationery in Sachsenhausen is celebrating 30 years!

A very special anniversary is being celebrated in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen: the charming one Schmidt's stationery, which was founded thirty years ago by Cordula Fanger, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a big celebration on Saturday, November 1st. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., guests can toast to a glass of crémant and popcorn in the store at Schweizer Straße 67, while a DJ provides the musical accompaniment. What a celebration!

The owner, Cordula Fanger, is one of the creative minds who masters retail in Frankfurt. Originally working as a graphic designer in various advertising agencies, the brilliant idea for opening her stationery came to her when she visited a “mini department store” in London. After an internship in a Munich stationery store, the foundation for Schmidt’s was laid. “The individual shopping experience,” says Fanger, is very important to her and shapes the concept of her store.

Creative shopping experience in Sachsenhausen

In its 48 square meters, the stationery offers a wide range of pretty products: postcards, wrapping paper, notebooks and home accessories. The cups from the “Design Letters” and “Eulenschnitt” brands are particularly in demand. Fanger notes that her main customer base is women, who are often looking for cards for various occasions. The postcard stand in front of the store reliably attracts passers-by and encourages shopping.

However, the changes in retail cannot be overlooked. According to an analysis of the market The paper industry continues to struggle with its peculiarities and challenges. Advancing digitalization and the corona pandemic have resulted in a decline in sales, and the demanding retail sector is particularly feeling the effects. Nevertheless, an increase in sales to over 13 billion euros was recorded in 2023, indicating a slow recovery.

Hurdles for small businesses

Fanger himself criticizes the lack of support for small businesses in Frankfurt. “The city should do more to preserve retail,” she says. Despite the challenges, Fanger has built up a loyal circle of regular customers who regularly take advantage of their stationery-specific offers. The shop window is redesigned every three weeks and can score points with new wall colors and trendy design.

Schmidt’s Stationery is not just a shop, but a place of inspiration. At trade fairs such as Paperworld and Creativeworld, Fanger is constantly looking for new ideas and trends. She is particularly fond of the retro style and Scandinavian design and likes to bring a breath of fresh air to her range. Whether loving packaging or high-quality wrapping paper – quality is very important at Schmidt’s.

The successful history of Schmidt’s Papeterie is proof of how much passion and commitment can go into a small business. With the upcoming celebration of its 30th anniversary, Cordula Fanger shows that the passion for paper and the joy of creative design need not come to an end. A visit to Schmidt’s is definitely worth it!
