Sparkasse Fulda invests 20,000 euros in moor renaturation!
An exciting renaturation project is currently being carried out in the picturesque district of Fulda, which not only benefits nature but also climate protection. Sparkasse Fulda contributed a generous amount of 20,000 euros to the project, which is being managed by Hessenforst. The aim is to rewet two moor areas in the fascinating Rhönwald, above Hilders. Uwe Marohn, the Sparkasse's CEO, and the sustainability coordinator Lisa Fuß recently visited the project site to see for themselves the progress, as Osthessen News reports.
Why are moors so important? Although these moist biotopes only take up around 0.4 percent of the state's area in Hesse, they are essential for climate protection. Every year they remove between 150 and 250 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere - that's twice as much as all forests worldwide capture. This aspect is particularly important when you consider that drained moors in Germany cause around seven percent of greenhouse gas emissions, shows an overview source from [Hessenschau](https://www.hessenschau.de/panorama/klimaschutz-wie-hessische-moore-renaturiert- Werden-sollen-v1,moore-tag-der-feuchtgebiet-100.html).
The project in the Hochrhön
The project implemented in the Hochrhön has already taken important measures: old drainage ditches were dismantled and wooden bars were installed to prevent water drainage. Bernd Mordziol-Stelzer, deputy head of the Hofbieber Forestry Office, explained the specific challenges and solutions necessary for successful renaturation. The first steps have already been implemented in autumn 2023, and incredible biodiversity is expected: over 60 species of birds and croaking frogs have discovered their new habitat.
The Sparkasse is not only supporting the project this year, but has also provided additional funds for next year. A special highlight will be a tour for Sparkasse Fulda employees, which is scheduled to take place at the end of September. This means that employees can experience first hand what is achieved with their support.
The importance of moors for the climate
Peatlands play a crucial role in the earth's water balance and improve water quality. According to the Heinrich Böll Foundation, they store ten percent of the world's fresh water and are therefore indispensable for biodiversity. Nevertheless, in Germany only a tiny part of two percent of the moors are considered natural; the majority suffer from human interference. The forecasts warn of more frequent extreme weather events, endangering the future of these important ecosystems, according to information from the Böll Foundation.
The Hesse 2030 climate plan therefore plans to spend one million euros on moorland renaturation in the state forest by 2026. Support for private and municipal forest owners amounting to 400,000 euros until 2027 is also part of these comprehensive measures. The aim is to restore the Hessian forest moors, as they are valuable retention areas for water and can provide protection during flood events.
In summary, it shows that the renaturation of the moors in Hesse is a promising undertaking that not only benefits nature, but also us humans. By dealing sustainably with these valuable ecosystems, we simultaneously create habitats for animals and plants and actively contribute to climate protection.
