Hesse renews amphibian protection system: safety for frogs and traffic

From Monday, September 22nd, there will be greater intervention in amphibian protection management: Hessen Mobil will tackle the existing amphibian protection system on State Road 3244 between Aue and Wanfried. The goal of this renewal is clear: to bring amphibians and road traffic into harmony. The current system has some damage, which is why replacement is urgently needed in order to increase the safety not only of large and small reptiles, but also of road users.

The renovation includes a whole range of exciting innovations. Underground passages and even barriers are planned that will allow amphibians to cross safely. A combined water and amphibious culvert will be included in the new design, accompanied by ten additional culverts that will be between nine and eleven meters in length. To ensure that the amphibians can move around safely, additional stop channels are being installed on the community paths.

Optimization of traffic conditions

But it's not just the amphibians that benefit from these measures. The roadway in the affected section will also be replaced and the drainage will be improved. In addition, adjustments to the road gradient are planned, as well as the laying of a seepage pipeline. The aim of all of these location adjustments is to ensure safe and consistent traffic routing.

The construction work, which is expected to last until the end of October, will involve the road being completely closed. In order to guarantee the safety of all road users and workers, traffic will be redirected in both directions: from Wanfried towards Eschwege via the B 249, Frieda and Schwebda. Appropriate detour signs will be posted on site.

Protection of biodiversity

But why is protecting amphibians so important? Preserving biological diversity is particularly important in times of habitat loss and increasing road traffic. Amphibian protection systems therefore play a key role in protecting frogs, toads and newts from traffic accidents during their breeding season and during their migration. These measures also minimize the risk of road users accidentally driving over animals, which can lead to dangerous situations.

As described in a comprehensive publication by the Ministry of Transport, structural measures on road structures and the creation of replacement biotopes are fundamental steps to enable the undisturbed reproduction and migration of amphibians. Such steps also effectively complement the existing infrastructure.
