Increasing youth crime – an issue affecting society as a whole

The incidents in Bad Hersfeld highlight a larger problem in Germany: youth crime. According to current statistics, juvenile crime peaked in 2024 with around 13,800 cases. The numbers are more than twice as high as in 2016. Young people between the ages of 14 and 17 and young adults between the ages of 18 and 20 are particularly affected. Psychological stress and risk factors, especially among young people seeking protection, are possible explanations for this increase, as the Federal Criminal Police Office notes statista.com.

Interestingly, it is noticeable that the vast majority of young suspects are male. In 2024, almost three quarters of young offenders were men. This raises questions about traditional role models and learned behaviors. However, discussions about stricter measures in the juvenile justice system or even a reduction in the age of criminal responsibility are met with great resistance. Instead, an increased focus on prevention, particularly through child and youth welfare measures, is becoming increasingly important.
