Baunatal: KSV calls for pedestrian traffic lights after a serious accident!
The traffic on Altenritter Straße in Baunatal continues to increase and is not only causing unrest among drivers, but also legitimate concerns among passers-by and residents. Especially after a tragic incident in 2018, in which a 74-year-old department head at KSV Baunatal died while crossing the street, the call for pedestrian traffic lights is becoming louder. The KSV board has been calling for a solution to ensure the safety of pedestrians for years. But both the city of Baunatal and Hessen Mobil have so far rejected a traffic light solution.
The official reason is that there are no sidewalks or significant public objects on the opposite side of the L 3218. Instead, a walkway leads over a bridge, which, however, is only used by a few. KSV CEO Georg Heinemann is disappointed with this decision and points out that many passers-by still cross the street instead of taking the detour over the bridge. Parents often let their children get out on the side of the road to cross the road - a dangerous habit that will hopefully soon be a thing of the past.
Measures to improve security
It is noticeable that despite the high traffic load, no concrete safety measures were taken. KSV hopes that the situation can be defused through regular checks by the public order office in the morning hours. Hessen Mobil has announced that it will carry out a traffic count in order to collect representative data and be able to better assess the situation.
In addition, the city of Baunatal is planning an immediate measure: the removal of the parking strip opposite the new Am Stadtpark development area is intended to ensure that pedestrian crossings are avoided in this section. However, nothing is known about when the cancellation will take place, which is testing the patience of the residents and the KSV board.
Current traffic situation
The situation remains tense and the pressure on those responsible is growing to finally find a safe solution for pedestrians. The residents and the KSV cannot let go of the hope that a pedestrian traffic light will soon be installed. Every accident is one too many and it is time for a rethink in traffic management.
