Renovation of the Brüder-Grimm-Platz: Kassel will be greener and more traffic-friendly!

There's a lot going on at the Brüder-Grimm-Platz in Kassel! The renovation is already underway and everything should be completed by documenta 16, which takes place in 700 days. The estimated cost of the project is around 10 million euros, part of which will be financed from federal funds. Construction work is currently in the first of seven phases, where the focus is on relocating electricity, water and gas pipes. The cables are no longer allowed to run through the future tree circle made up of 70 pine trees. The wallpaper museum will also benefit from the renovation work and will receive a district heating connection HNA reported.

The work on the lines is scheduled to be completed by October 2025, while Friedrichsstrasse between Wilhelmshöher Allee and Oberster Gasse is expected to remain closed until then. The conversion project is not only a technical challenge, but also brings with it some changes in traffic. For example, a new traffic light system at the town hall intersection will be put into operation from July 14th. The left turn from Obere Königsstrasse into Fünffensterstrasse, which was used by around 1,300 vehicles every day, will be replaced by a U-turn at Trumpet, which creates more space for pedestrians.

Climate protection and green spaces

A central concern of the renovation is to improve environmental conditions by taking climate protection and climate adaptation into account, according to those responsible. Around 12,000 m² of the 15,000 m² area are currently sealed. As part of the redesign, unsealing measures are planned that will expand the green areas by around 650 m² and thus increase it from 1,840 m² to 2,500 m². The plan is to plant around 70 trees, mainly Scots pines, as well as underplanting with perennials and ornamental grasses. This should not only contribute to biodiversity, but also create a pleasant atmosphere at the site. Kassel.de also emphasizes that an underground cistern system for rainwater use is also being planned.

In the spirit of sustainability, a light-colored court surface is also used, which helps to reduce the heating of the court. These ecological measures fall into a larger trend Bpb as part of urban development: Cities must be better planned for the population in order to meet the increasing demands on quality of life. Asphalted areas and unused green spaces are often a problem in cities, which is why sustainable urban development that combines social, ecological and economic aspects is becoming increasingly important.

A place for everyone

The renovation work also includes a redesign of Weinbergstrasse, which will begin in February 2026 and be completed by the middle of the year. Classic sidewalks are replaced by square areas that encourage pedestrians to linger and interact. In addition, Friedrichsstraße will be converted into a bicycle street, which means that cyclists will be able to travel in both directions in the future. All of this is intended to make the space more attractive not only for drivers, but especially for pedestrians and cyclists.

The demolition work on the dilapidated Garde-du-Corps car park is planned for August 2025 and is expected to take around three months. With these many renovations and new buildings, Brüder-Grimm-Platz is becoming a lively and modern district that can meet the needs of residents and visitors.
