Mayor Litzinger promises quick help after outdoor pool harassment
Something is brewing in picturesque Gelnhausen, which is known for its Barbarossa outdoor swimming pool: Mayor Christian Litzinger (CDU) has made urgent statements about alleged sexual harassment that occurred on June 22nd of this year. According to Borkener Zeitung, Litzinger has promised to do everything in his power to help the girls affected and to fully clarify the incidents.
The city takes the incidents very seriously and immediate action was taken. Both the city police and swimming pool employees are on duty to prevent misconduct and to be available as contact persons for bathers. The mayor also made it clear that the city of Gelnhausen is offering support to the girls affected, including criminal advice and psychological support. “It is our responsibility to prevent such incidents,” emphasizes Litzinger.
Investigations and support for victims
The Hanau public prosecutor's office has taken over the investigation against four Syrian men between the ages of 18 and 28 who are the focus of the investigation. These men are said to have been active in the Barbarossa outdoor pool in Gelnhausen, where at least eight girls between the ages of 11 and 16 were molested between 5 and 6 p.m. This information is confirmed by Tagesschau, which also reports that the number of girls affected has been increased from the original five to eight.
“We have the identities of the suspects and every effort is being made to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the mayor added. He also emphasizes that there is only one limited security incident and that in 2024 there were only four cases of banning people from entering this outdoor pool, but without any sexual background.
Statistical insights into security incidents
According to Statista, a comprehensive estimate of crimes recorded by the police in swimming pools in Germany shows an increasing number of incidents, especially in swimming pools in Hesse. In 2024, 74 crimes against sexual self-determination were registered there, with more than 60% of the suspects being non-German citizens. These numbers illustrate the seriousness of the situation and the urgency of an effective security strategy.
The police praise the quick action of the girls affected, who came forward quickly. Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) calls for prompt clarification and clear consequences. District Administrator Thorsten Stolz (SPD) even goes so far as to demand the return of the suspects if the suspicion is confirmed.
The issue of migration is not ignored. However, there is also an express warning against the blanket discrediting of people with a migration background. The local editorial team also points out the importance of responsible reporting in order not to draw false conclusions.
In this tense situation, the city of Gelnhausen remains called upon to both offer protection for its young citizens and promote an open discussion about safety in public facilities.
