Tornado hotspot North Hesse: Several hurricanes in June 2025!
Storms have Germany firmly in their grip this year, and northern Hesse is in the spotlight as a tornado hotspot. As of today, June 18, there have already been two confirmed tornadoes in this region in 2025. fr.de reports that the German Weather Service (DWD) has confirmed the tornado in Hessisch Lichtenau after a severe storm on June 15th. This tornado followed another storm that caused two tornadoes in Hesse on May 3rd - one in Biebertal and one in the Werra-Meißner district.
The tornado workshop is in full swing as the last few weeks have been characterized by rapid weather changes. We remember the first confirmed event of the year, which occurred on March 30th in Uenze, Brandenburg. A 1.3 km path was cut here with wind speeds of around 150 km/h. But it was May that really got tornado season rolling.
May – a tornado month
And it got turbulent! [DWD]. The tornado season was particularly active from May 28th, when corresponding events occurred in Hesse and Lower Franconia, which caused damage in built-up areas.
There was also an impressive picture in Donaustetten near Ulm: The strongest tornado of the season hit its path on June 7th, reached speeds of around 220 km/h and had a maximum width of 310 m. He left a trail of destruction over 15.5 km. Numerous trees were uprooted and several houses in the residential area were also damaged.
Current developments and forecasts
Tornado ratings are increasing as the weather situation in Germany becomes more and more dynamic. So far this year, 19 tornadoes – including plausible cases – have been recorded. This is significantly less than the annual average of 49 tornadoes. But the numbers could increase as soon as possible, as August and September historically bring a surge in activity. Waterspouts cannot be ruled out on the North and Baltic Seas.
A possible break in tornadoes seems to become apparent after June 15th, which the DWD is currently forecasting for the coming weeks. This dramatic weather development shows that dynamic weather conditions must be used in the fight against the forces of nature. The tornado events are recorded in detail in the European severe weather database and on the German tornado list. wetterdienst.de also pays attention to the fact that the more active the sky becomes, the more information is collected for the discussion about tornadoes.
Overall, it remains to be seen what the coming months will bring. What is certain, however, is that in parts of Germany, especially in Hesse, the tornado weather continues to provide exciting but also dangerous challenges.
