Bad Nauheim celebrates Windkunst II: historic mill shines again!

There is currently a lot of talk in Bad Nauheim about reviving historical traditions. The windmill on the Long Wall, a landmark of the region, now officially bears the name “Windkunst II”. A newly installed decorative board with this inscription gives the mill a fresh coat of paint. The painting specialist Marc Fuchs, together with master student Natalie Scharfe, created the artistic lettering that gave the mill a new shine. This not only recognizes the mill as a technical monument, but also gives it a contemporary art reference, says FNP.

The windmill, built in 1745, is one of the most important historical windmills in Bad Nauheim. Together with the Waitz Tower, which was built in 1742 and is considered Wind Art No. I, the windmill is one of the last remnants of a once widespread use of wind power. However, both mills were destroyed in a devastating hurricane in 1824 and have since come back into focus for their cultural and historical significance.

Recovery and support

The association “Wind and Water Art Bad Nauheim e.V.” is actively committed to the preservation and restoration of such monuments. Its goal is to protect and live the technical heritage of the region. Beyond the purely historical aspects, windmills also have an important place in the city and landscape. “We not only want to preserve these building materials, but also make them visible and tangible for future generations,” explains the association on its website betterplace.

Windkunst II is expected to be completed this year, but the mill's wings are still missing. The association is therefore calling for financial support and has set up a donation account at Sparkasse Oberhessen and Volksbank Mittelhessen in order to further advance the project.

The historical significance of windmills

Windmills are not only technical monuments, but also important evidence of the history of the cultural landscape. They show the changes in the use of natural resources over the centuries. As described on HS-NB, windmills still have a high status in Germany today, not only as an archive of contemporary history, but also as cultural symbols that shape the identity of entire regions.

Another point that is being actively discussed in Bad Nauheim is the upcoming exhibition and other cultural events. For example, a yoga course from the Kneipp Association in Bad Nauheim-Steinfurth starts on September 1st, which is intended to bring body and mind into balance. These courses are particularly suitable for beginners and offer simple exercises as well as breathing and relaxation exercises.

So Bad Nauheim remains on the move, whether in the restoration of historical buildings or in the creation of new leisure activities that enrich community life. The plans for the windmill and the Kneipp Association's initiatives show how important it is to combine history and present in order to keep local culture alive.
