New Presidium Elected: Pia Greiten Leads Athletes Germany into the Future!

The eighth general meeting of Athletes Germany took place on Saturday, November 1st, 2025. A special highlight was the election of Pia Greiten as the club's new president. She follows Karla Borger and Max Hartung and is the third person in this role. During the meeting, Léa Krüger was also elected as Vice President and other members of the new Executive Board, including Hendrik Dombek (speed skating), Elena Semechin (para-swimming) and Leo Köpp (athletics). These new elections represent a breath of fresh air in the organization and bring with them youthful dynamism. The club's managing director, Johannes Herber, congratulated the new executive committee on their election and emphasized the sports policy challenges that now lie ahead. There was also the possibility of co-opting two additional members, with at least one coming from the non-Olympic sector. In her inaugural speech, Pia Greiten highlighted the challenges for athletes in Germany, particularly with regard to security, protection against abuse of power and the participation of athletes.

Reports on developments and tasks of the association were also presented at the meeting and the financial report and budget for 2026 were approved. Herber thanked the members who left, including Tobias Preuß, Dajana Eitberger, Fabienne Königstein and Yero Ndiaye, who also did not run again.

Sports funding law: A point of contention

Around 80 athlete representatives from 47 sports associations have called for substantial changes to the draft law. They are committed to providing appropriate coverage, which includes items such as maternity protection, financial support, retirement provision and insurance coverage. A particularly urgent concern is ensuring a minimum monthly amount of 1,700 euros for athletes who are not employed by the Bundeswehr or Federal Police.

A step into the future

The law provides for the establishment of an independent sports agency that is intended to award funding in an unbureaucratic manner. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser described the law as a milestone for Germany as a sports location. The goal is clear: the medal yield at international competitions, especially at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, should be improved. Germany reached a historic low with 33 medals at the last Olympic Games, finishing tenth. Many hope that the new framework conditions and the election of the new executive board will provide impetus to change this situation and offer the athletes the support they need.

There is currently a lot going on with offices and laws that have an impact on the future of sport in Germany. Athletes Germany is facing a groundbreaking phase in which it is important to strengthen the voice of athletes and fight for fairer funding.

Let’s stay tuned to see how the new challenges will develop! Athletes Germany and ZDF Today continue to report on all developments.
