Danger! Oak processionary moths threaten the joy of spring in Braunschweig!

Summer is approaching and inevitably many people are drawn outside. But while the warm days awaken feelings of spring, there is a danger hiding in local oak trees: the oak processionary moth. This caterpillar is active from May to the end of July or beginning of August and makes its home on oak trees. This butterfly has caused a stir in the heart of Braunschweig in recent years, and not without reason. According to news38.de, the city took early measures to protect the population.

From the third larval stage onwards, the caterpillars develop poisonous stinging hairs, which can result in severe allergic reactions. These include itchy rashes, sore throats and even asthma attacks. For this reason, the city of Braunschweig is taking action and removing caterpillar nests in sensitive areas such as schools, daycare centers and retirement homes within 24 hours. In residential areas, removal takes place within 48 hours. Citizens are asked to heed signs and avoid affected areas.

Dangers and symptoms

What makes stinging hairs so dangerous? According to aok.de, even contact with the fine hairs leads to so-called caterpillar dermatitis. Areas of uncovered skin such as the neck, face and arms are particularly affected. Symptoms range from reddened skin to hives and blistering rashes. These allergic reactions often appear within 15 to 60 minutes and can manifest themselves as hives. In rare cases, contact even leads to severe allergic reactions.

In addition, inhaling the hairs can irritate the respiratory tract and cause serious breathing difficulties in people who have already been exposed. According to netdoktor.de, playing children, walkers and residents of infested areas are particularly at risk. Anyone who lives near oak trees or frequently travels in the forest should be particularly careful.

What should be done?

The city of Braunschweig offers support. If you suspect that you have discovered an infected oak tree, you can contact the city administration directly. The citizens' telephone can be reached at 0531/470-1 or 0531/115, and you can also send an email to buergertelefon@braunschweig.de. It is important that only infected oak trees should be reported, as harmless caterpillars can easily be confused with the oak processionary moth.

The city also makes it clear that heavily affected areas will be treated with environmentally friendly nematodes in the first half of May to control the caterpillar population. A healthy approach to nature and precautionary measures can help minimize the risk of allergies in the beautiful summer time. Stay alert and enjoy the warm days without any unpleasant surprises!
