New Hagenmarkt in Braunschweig: A green oasis with leisure character is being created!
On Monday, August 11th, Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum broke ground for the redesign of the Hagenmarkt in Braunschweig. This project aims to create an attractive city square that not only offers space for events, but also creates generous open spaces for restaurants. The new Hagenmarkt is intended to be an inviting place to linger, which will also contribute significantly to improving the microclimate in the city center. This reports News38.
The redesign primarily affects the southwestern area around the Heinrichsbrunnen and is based on a well-thought-out design by the “capattistaubach” office. During implementation, numerous measures should be taken that serve both ecological and urban development goals. The planned measures include unsealing the square, planting over 80 new trees and innovative rainwater management. The latter will not only store rainwater, but also use it to irrigate plants.
Sustainability and climate adaptation
Adapting to the challenges of climate change is particularly important to city planners. The project therefore also envisages the implementation of the “sponge city” principle, which includes climate change-resistant trees for shade on hot summer days. Like the article by City and green explains, rainwater management not only conserves groundwater resources, but also relieves pressure on inner cities through targeted cooling. Operators of pilot projects have already shown how efficiently rainwater can be used to design urban spaces both functionally and aesthetically.
As part of the Hagenmarkt project, the entire road infrastructure in this area will be renewed, which will also lead to improvements for walking and cycling. The supply lines are also being updated. And although the construction work is scheduled to last a whole year, light rail traffic will remain unaffected, which is a great relief for commuters.
Traffic changes and closures
However, the project also presents some challenges for residents and road users. From August 13th, the Bohlweg at Hagenmarkt will be closed to traffic; To ensure traffic flow, cars are being diverted over a large area of the city ring road. Casparistrasse will be closed to through traffic during construction, but residents can still access the street. It is important to know that there will be one lane in each direction between Fallersleber Straße and Küchenstraße, so that all properties are within walking distance.
The total cost of the project is around 7.35 million euros. So far, funding totaling 1.12 million euros has been made available from the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund). In order to take the increased costs into account, an application is being submitted to increase the funding to 1.7 million euros, which underlines the importance of this project.
In summary, it can be said that the redesign of the Hagenmarkt not only represents an aesthetic improvement of the inner-city landscape in the center of Braunschweig, but is also an important measure to adapt to climatic challenges and to improve the quality of life for citizens.
