CDU politician Walczak resigns from Facebook after Nazi slogans

A shocking incident is shaking the political landscape in Lower Saxony: CDU local politician Marco Walczak caused a stir on Facebook with a comment that included the National Socialist slogan “Work sets you free”. The article referred to a post by the Lower Saxony Left about citizens' money. On October 28, 2025, at 7:18 p.m., Walczak's comment became known, which immediately caused sharp reactions. The mayor of Seevetal, Emily Weede, confirmed the incidents to NDR Lower Saxony and made it unmistakably clear that Walczak had resigned from all political offices.

Walczak, who until recently chaired the Meckelfeld, Klein-Moor CDU local branch and also served on the Seevetal municipal council and the district council, is withdrawing completely from politics. This comes at a time when uncertainty within the CDU is growing, especially with regard to the possible impact of his statements on other political mandates. It is currently unclear who will take over his office.

A “bad faux pas”

In a statement, Walczak called the incident a "bad faux pas" and said he was unaware of the historical significance of the saying. This met with strong criticism from political opponents and within their own ranks. The state government and especially the CDU Lower Saxony strongly condemned the statements. The General Secretary of the CDU, Marco Mohrmann, described the use of National Socialist slogans as unacceptable.

As a result, regulatory measures were introduced that prevented Walczak from commenting on political issues related to the CDU for three months. This is a clear indication of how seriously the party is taking the incident. Walczak also responded to the allegations by claiming that his family and warding off possible consequences from the left spectrum were now his priority.

Criticism from different camps

The Lower Saxony Left reacted indignantly to Walczak's comment. The state leader of the Left, Thorben Peters, spoke of a “moral, political and human red line” and demanded clear consequences from the CDU for Walczak’s behavior. He made it clear that anyone who uses Nazi vocabulary cannot hold office in a democratic party. Such statements not only cast a shadow over Walczak's political career, but also affect citizens' general level of trust in politics.

To make matters worse, Walczak is also facing a financial burden: He was sentenced to a fine of around 10,000 euros, against which he has appealed. In this context, Walczak emphasized that he had also faced personal attacks in the past, particularly in connection with a village festival at which the AfD had an information stand.

The incident shows how quickly words can lead to reactions and sheds light on the sensitivity in political discourse. While the CDU is trying to distance itself from Walczak's statements, it remains to be seen what consequences this will have for the local politician's political future.
