Train traffic between Uelzen and Celle: return after disruptions!
After a long interruption, rail traffic between Uelzen and Celle partially resumed on Thursday evening, July 10, 2025. After about seven and a half hours of closure, which began at 3 p.m., one track was reopened at 10 p.m., reports the Uelzen press. The original cause of the disruption was an embankment fire, which also significantly damaged the overhead line in the Unterlüß area and caused restrictions in train traffic as early as Wednesday.
The affected train lines, which include the regional express lines RE2 and RE3/RB31, are now running again, but passengers must expect significant delays, especially on the route to Hanover. The Metronome has set up a rail replacement bus service that serves the stops in Uelzen, Suderburg, Unterlüß, Eschede and Celle. However, the space in the replacement buses is also limited, which is why travelers are asked to use alternative connections, such as via Bremen to Hanover.
Care for those waiting
To support the stranded travelers, emergency services were called in at the Uelzen and Celle train stations to provide them with drinks and other necessary supplies. An air-conditioned hotel train is available in Uelzen to bridge the waiting times for passengers.
The situation is part of a larger problem in regional rail traffic, which was also caused by several embankment fires and a catenary fault, as the Celler press explains in detail. While the railway in northern Germany is trying to resolve the disruptions, delays and restrictions are still to be expected. The effects are particularly noticeable in regional transport, where passengers also have to expect train cancellations - especially in western Germany.
Current developments
The weather situation in northern Germany is currently having a negative impact on the infrastructure. T-Online reports that the high temperatures in combination with the fire events are also affecting other railway lines, with some routes having already been reopened. However, Deutsche Bahn recommends that travelers regularly inform themselves about current changes in order to avoid unnecessary waiting times.
Complete normalization of traffic on the closed route between Uelzen and Celle is expected after all repair work has been completed. Travelers should check the Metronom website for the current status of their connection to ensure a smooth journey.
