Future in sight: Calculator handed over to Leucate's new Collégiens

Leucate is currently preparing for the next school term: on July 6, 2025, the traditional handover of pocket calculators to the future colleges took place in the community. In the two schools, Marie-Catala in Port-Leucate and André-Héléna in Leucate village, numerous CM2 students (5th grade) celebrated this special occasion.

The first alderman Monique Ching and the alderman responsible for education Édouard Picarel were present at the handover. The festive mood was characterized by anticipation of the next step in education, as the students will receive the new scientific calculator, an important tool for the upcoming transition to the 6th grade in September. The support does not go unnoticed: both children and parents are grateful for the city's efforts to ensure a successful school education.

The importance of calculators

A calculator is more than just a technical device; it opens new doors for students that make learning much easier. As you can read at Casio Education, the scientific calculators are specifically designed for school requirements and offer a wide range of functions. These devices will become an indispensable friend in math and science lessons.

In an education system that brings with it a variety of challenges, the use of modern learning materials is becoming increasingly important. The French education system, which is now predominantly public and has a clearly structured process from preschool to high school, shows how education can be promoted as a joint project. Be it in the école élémentaire, which lasts five years, or in the college, where four years lead to the award of the Diplôme national du brevet - the foundations are laid here, and the calculator is part of it.

Insight into the French education system

Everyday school life in France follows strict regulations. Classes usually start between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. All-day schools offer childcare options, and meals in the canteen are based on income. Since the 2018 reform, many schools have reduced classes to four days a week, giving children more free time on weekends.

School type Length of time Special features
école maternelle 3 years (from 3 years) Mandatory, 97% participation rate
école élémentaire 5 years Subjects including foreign languages
college 4 years Graduation with Diplôme national du brevet
Lycee 3 years Abitur (Baccalaureate)

The challenge of the education system lies not only in the transfer of knowledge, but also in social integration, as schools have been obliged to accept children with disabilities since 2005. Leucate is also committed to taking prudent measures for inclusion and thus giving all children equal access to education.

With the recently distributed calculators, Leucate is once again showing that education is a high priority for everyone. The city not only invests in materials, but also in the future of its children. The new Collégiens can start their next school phase freshly equipped - we can't wait to see what they will achieve!
