CSD security situation: fear and resistance in Delmenhorst!
Today, June 28, 2025, Christopher Street Day (CSD) is celebrated, a significant day of remembrance and action commemorating the legendary 1969 protests on New York's Christopher Street. Pride season includes hundreds of CSD events that celebrate the visibility of the queer community and advocate for their rights. This year, however, the demonstrations are under the shadow of increasing threats.
Demos with the motto “Loud, visible, proud” are taking place today in several northern German cities, including Cloppenburg and Nordenham. Due to a disturbing increase in anti-queer attacks, security precautions have been strengthened, with the number of stewards in some cities being doubled. Delmenews reports that an attack on participants at the CSD in Emden was recently carried out by a group of young people, which only increases concerns about security during the events.
Violent incidents and social support
The security situation for queer people has deteriorated drastically in recent years. In 2023, 1,785 attacks on LGBTIQ* people were recorded in Germany, which corresponds to an increase of around 50 percent compared to 2022. The most common crimes are insults, violence and threats. These worrying developments do not stop at the CSD parades, which increasingly have to take place under police protection. Tagesschau highlights that the number of anti-queer crimes has increased almost tenfold since 2010, which represents an alarming trend.
Due to this tense situation, some companies have decided to forego donations for political reasons. Federal President Julia Klöckner also refrained from symbolically supporting the Berlin CSD this year. These withdrawals raise questions: What happens to the CSDs when they are no longer places of celebration, but demonstrations under police protection? WDR addresses the increasing social support, which seems to be decreasing in some areas, and calls for us to fight together for a strong queer community.
View of Delmenhorst and upcoming events
The Delmenhorster CSD is planned for September 20, 2025 and is already raising questions about the safety of participants. The organizers have received numerous hate comments in the past, especially after announcing their event. The mayor of Delmenhorst, Petra Gerlach, proudly describes her city as “diverse and cosmopolitan”. Many people are all the more disappointed by the negative tones from various social camps.
The problems are not simply solved. A working group to combat homophobic and transphobic violence was founded in September 2022, but the required prosecution of anti-queer violence remains a challenge. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser calls for consistent measures and increased attention to the threats that queer people face. A joint protection of the community by politics, police and society is necessary.
Today's CSD celebration is not just a celebration, but also an urgent appeal to everyone to remain in solidarity and stand up for the rights of the queer community. Much is at stake, and it is up to each individual to fight for a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
