Cuxhaven: From fishing to wind power – a coastal special!
In picturesque Cuxland, where the Elbe meets the Weser, things are booming both economically and touristically. The region is a real gem with a wide range of offerings that captivate both locals and holidaymakers. Loud NDR The charming sandy beaches of Duhnen, Döse and Sahlenburg are very popular. With its coastal cafés and harbor flair, Cuxhaven is well worth a trip for anyone who wants to escape everyday life.
But Cuxhaven has more to offer than just relaxation on the beach. The region has developed into a hotspot for wind energy companies in recent years. Siemens Gamesa produces modern wind turbines here with a powerful piece that can weigh up to 500 tons. David Tomechna, who works as a dangerous goods officer, uses his expertise to ensure that the transport of the large machines is storm-proof and that everything goes according to plan.
A look into the future: New berths for the energy transition
In order to meet the boom in wind power, Cuxhaven is planning a significant expansion of its port infrastructure. The construction of new berths 5 to 7 in the German Offshore Industry Center is scheduled to begin in February 2025. According to information from cuxhaven.de A total length of 1,250 meters will be created to cover the need for transshipment and storage space for wind turbines. With construction costs of around 300 million euros and a funding commitment of up to 200 million euros from the “joint task to improve the regional economic structure”, this project is intended to not only stimulate the regional economy, but also advance the energy transition.
The new berths will be designed for jack-up ships, which will be stabilized in the water using special piles. With a load of 15 tons per square meter, the planned terminal areas offer enough space to provide adequate berth for even larger ships.
Tradition and modernity go hand in hand
In addition to wind power, Cuxhaven also has a rich tradition that is being preserved. Birgit Strohsahl, who is a fifth-generation Watt coach driver, takes her carriage rides to Neuwerk and is thus continuing an old tradition. It is these stories that make the region come alive.
At the same time, Cuxhaven is also reinventing itself. Malte Rabe and Leonard Reinhardt have opened a beach bar in Wremen with the aim of attracting a younger audience to the water's edge. And the brothers Jasper and Julius Brütt have taken over the campsite in Duhnen to create a family atmosphere and at the same time bring a breath of fresh air into hospitality.
A gastronomic experience right on the water
The beach gastronomy in Cuxhaven has a unique charm. The mix of traditional coastal cuisine and modern gastronomy concepts attracts visitors and ensures that culinary enjoyment is not neglected. Anyone traveling in Cuxhaven cannot avoid a portion of fresh crabs and a cool drink. Shrimp fisherman Stephan Hellberg remains funny and charming, inviting his guests onto his historic boat “Nixe II” despite challenging economic times.
