Deichbrand Festival 2025: 20 years of party and controversy surrounding Macklemore!
The Deichbrand Festival, one of the largest festivals in northern Germany, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025 on the picturesque Wurster North Sea coast in Cuxhaven. From July 17th to 20th, the organizers are expecting around 60,000 music enthusiasts on the festival grounds, where over 120 acts from rock, hip-hop, electro and pop will perform on five stages. The American rapper Macklemore is expected to be among the most prominent artists, but his performance has already been criticized in advance. NDR reports, that Macklemore is controversial because of his political lyrics and especially because of the song “Hind’s Hall” and his portrayal of Israel. Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews, has also expressed concerns, while anti-Semitism commissioner Felix Klein described the invitation as “unbearable.”
The festival's exciting line-up is diverse and promises variety. On opening day, visitors can look forward to newcomer bands such as Headjet, Vargo and Alicia Hahn. The Fire Stage will invite you to celebrate with Beauty & The Beats from 10 p.m. and later with BUNT. On the following days, artists such as K.I.Z, Deichkind and Timmy Trumpet will be on stage; Finally, on Sunday the main act Macklemore will perform at 10:30 p.m. N-TV has also reported that the security concepts are closely coordinated with the security authorities in order to avoid possible conflicts in connection with Macklemore's appearance.
Extensive supporting program
But the Deichbrand Festival doesn’t just offer musical highlights. A varied supporting program with attractions such as a Ferris wheel, DIY workshops in the Green Circus and even beer yoga awaits visitors. A chill zone at the XXL pool with a beach area and volleyball courts ensure a relaxed atmosphere between performances. It is also worth noting that around 600 volunteer paramedics from all over Germany will be present to provide quick help in the event of injuries.
Amid the spirit of celebration, the festival also encourages important discussions. Anne Groß, a language, music and cultural scientist, addresses the problem of anti-Semitism in the music scene, especially at festivals. She explains that the line between artistic freedom and discrimination is often crossed. The Weser Kurier highlights this, while at the same time pointing out the organizers' responsibility to develop a code of conduct to avoid such conflicts.
This year's edition of the Deichbrand Festival will not only highlight the artists' musical skills, but will also stimulate dialogue about important social issues. Given the current discussions about anti-Semitism, the situation surrounding Macklemore's appearance is being closely monitored by experts. It remains to be seen how this aspect will influence the festival.
