The Cuxhaven professional fire department was called a total of seven times within 24 hours - from New Year's Eve at 7:30 a.m. to New Year's morning. The operations included opening two apartment doors and removing two broken branches. In addition, fire alarm systems in a nursing home and a shopping center that were triggered incorrectly had to be checked. Only a fire in a hedge in Süderwisch, also caused by fireworks, was a significant incident.

Risks of injury and safety precautions

While many Cuxhaven residents celebrated the New Year with fireworks, experts warned of the risks associated with setting off fireworks. The hospital reported a serious facial injury caused by fireworks. A 55-year-old was then admitted to a clinic in Bremen. Fortunately, there were no further major injuries, although some missions were due to excessive alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, responsible use of fireworks is essential. Not only are the dangers posed by illegal and manipulated firecrackers mentioned, but also health risks caused by the release of fine dust.

Around 8,000 people suffer inner ear damage from fireworks every year, and during New Year's Eve the number of seriously injured people in emergency rooms increases three to four times. That's why experts warn to only use approved fireworks and to maintain safe distances.

Police operations and regulations

In the district, there was one fire in each of the municipalities of Hemmoor and Börde Lamstedt, which were caused by improper use of fireworks. In Lamstedt, residents were able to quickly put out a burning garbage can with a fire extinguisher. The Bremerhaven police also recorded numerous typical operations on New Year's Eve, including dealing with prohibited pyrotechnics. A 42-year-old was temporarily taken into custody for attempted grievous bodily harm.

In connection with illegal fireworks and dangerous behavior, it became clear that municipalities can also adopt additional regulations via general decree. It is important to maintain a safety distance of at least 200 meters from fire-sensitive buildings and to remove highly flammable objects from balconies and terraces. Windows and doors should also remain closed to avoid being unexpectedly surprised by exploding fireworks.

Despite the holiday, the turn of the year in Cuxhaven and the surrounding area has a positive outlook for most people. However, it remains to be hoped that everyone will ensure a safe New Year's Eve fireworks display and that pyrotechnic objects will be handled carefully.
