Göttingen is setting an example: the month of action against violence against women has started!

In Göttingen, November 2025 will be dedicated to violence prevention. The police department has declared it a month of action against sexual violence against women. The aim is to raise public awareness of the high number of cases and to send a strong message against violence and discrimination. In 2024, over 600 women within the police department's jurisdiction were victims of rape, sexual assault and other forms of sexual violence. A similar picture is emerging for the current year. Police Commissioner Tanja Wulff-Bruhn makes it clear: “Sexualized violence is not an expression of lust, but of power” and points out that the perpetrators are never to blame for the victim.

The campaign is intended not only to inform, but also to encourage people to seek help. Sexualized violence includes not only physical attacks, but also psychological pressure and verbal boundary violations, such as “catcalling”. Numerous actions are planned to give space to these topics. The first highlight took place on November 5th, when a podcast with journalist Isabel Moss was published about toxic relationships and violence in partnerships. In addition, from November 17th, a video will be shown on the Lower Saxony Police YouTube channel in which personal reports from women can be heard.

Public actions and exhibition

Another integral part of the campaign month is the postcard campaign, which spreads information about offers of help. These are distributed throughout the city to raise awareness and support those affected. The real highlight of the month, however, takes place between November 24th and 28th: the exhibition “What I wore” is presented in the Northeim town hall. Items of clothing that women were wearing at the time of an attack are shown here. The exhibition aims to show that sexual violence is in no way connected to the clothing of the victims. Admission is free and opening hours are daily from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition, the police take part in the UN campaign “Orange The World”. On November 25th, the management building in Göttingen will be illuminated orange and an orange flag will be hoisted. The police chief emphasizes: “Every third woman in Germany experiences physical or sexual violence in the course of her life.” This number is alarming and shows how important such measures are.

Use this month to find out about the various offers and perhaps take a stand against sexual violence yourself. Together we can pull together and point out that any attack is unacceptable and causes lasting damage to our society. Let us support those affected and help to continue to bring these issues to the fore.
