Volkswagen is currently facing a challenging situation that affects both the workforce and the unions. Recent reports of dramatic membership losses at IG Metall at the VW site in Wolfsburg caused an uproar. According to news38, the union is said to have asked for correction in this context. A spokesman for IG Metall dismissed the figures as “miles away” from reality. It is true that resignations do occur, but these can be attributed to predictable developments such as retirement and partial retirement. On a positive note, IG Metall continued to gain new members and the level of organization remains consistently high at over 90 percent.
Amid these developments, Volkswagen is facing a massive drop in profits. In order to stabilize the economic situation, extensive negotiations between IG Metall and VW management were necessary. These resulted in a comprehensive collective agreement. What is impressive is that around 100,000 employees protested against possible cuts plans by the board on two warning strike days. The collective bargaining agreement, which was reached after over 70 hours of negotiations, excludes operational dismissals until the end of 2030 and secures the jobs of the workforce until then, as you can read at igmetall.
A look at the agreements
A key part of the agreement states that VW will reduce the technical capacity of the plants by 734,000 units by 2030. This measure is part of the plan to achieve medium-term cost savings of over 15 billion euros per year. The retention of all plants until 2030 was a clear demand of IG Metall, and according to tagesschau this remains secured until further notice. The contractual partners also agreed that employees will forgo direct wage increases until the end of 2030 and that bonuses will be reduced.
