Lower Saxony shines: silver medal in hunting horn blowing in Hanover!
The 4th European Hunting Horn Blowing Championships recently took place in Hanover, which took place this year from October 6th to 8th, 2023. Around 350 participants from ten nations competed against each other and offered an impressive competition that was characterized by high quality and strong competition. The hunting horn players from Lower Saxony were able to shine with a silver medal.
The group from Lower Saxony, consisting of 17 wind players aged 14 to 69, showed their skills with the piece “Der Flintsberger”, which was specially arranged for this occasion and was composed by a colleague from the music school. Meike Unger, studied concert horn player and music teacher, was enthusiastic about the diversity of the participants and the unique atmosphere of the competition. With 236 points they achieved a remarkable performance and secured second place behind the Austrians, who won the gold medal with 243 points. The Czechs took third place with 232 points.

A total of 18 brass groups competed in class B. The following groups were able to place here:

- Platz 2: Niedersachsen mit 236 Punkten
- Platz 3: Tschechien mit 232 Punkten
- Platz 7: Parforcehornbläsergruppe „Mildetal Gardelegen“ aus Sachsen-Anhalt mit 311 Punkten
- Platz 8: „Hubertus Schwandorf“ aus Bayern
- Platz 11: „Hameln-Pyrmont“ aus Niedersachsen
- Platz 13: „Gelnhausen“ aus Hessen
The hunting horn players, who are rooted in this tradition, play on special instruments that are usually made of brass and offer an impressive variety of sounds. Blowing hunting horns is not only a musical performance, but also an important form of communication during hunting that is deeply rooted in the culture.
Looking into the future
After four competitions this year, the group is planning a well-deserved break after the autumn holidays and the Hubertus masses before preparing for the next European Championships in 2025. This will take place at the beautiful Lake Balaton in Hungary, where they will once again have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills.
