Harburg's community center will soon shine in new splendor: 7.6 million euros for culture!

Something is happening in the heart of Harburg – and doing it right! The Harburg community center, a cultural institution that is already over 40 years old, is being revamped with a breath of fresh air and extensive modernization. The total costs for this measure amount to an impressive 7.6 million euros, with a particular focus on sustainable and energy-efficient technology.

The modernization is secured primarily through funding from the “Integrated District Development” (RISE) framework program, which provides an impressive amount of 4.8 million euros. The project is also supported by 1 million euros from the tax authorities, 500,000 euros from the renovation fund and other funds from various funds, including 400,000 euros from the Harburg district assembly. So no stone is left unturned.

New equipment for a contemporary ambience

As part of the renovation, extensive measures are planned to re-equip the premises. 400 new chairs and 120 tables will be purchased for the large hall, with additional equipment worth 550,000 euros from city funds. Dr. Andreas Dressel, Finance Senator, emphasized the importance of political support for the community center and showed how important this institution is for cultural life in Harburg. “Culture is an essential part of our lives, and we are committed to ensuring that it continues to flourish,” said Dressel.

Back to the construction work: The facade of the listed building has already been extensively renovated and the internal work began in January. The community center is now equipped with a modern ventilation system with heat recovery, while the heat is supplied via district heating. A real plus point for the environment, as it is expected to achieve annual CO2 savings of around 95.97 tonnes.

Future outlook in a new guise

The renovation work is not only a logistical challenge, but also an opportunity for new uses. One of the innovations is the multifunctional room, which will be used for events and workshops on healthy eating. The Culture Palace Foundation, which will take over the premises again in spring 2026, already has big plans for integrating these newly created areas into its overall concept. Until then, the foundation's cultural program will continue at other venues.

District office manager Christian Carstensen emphasizes that the Harburg community center is a central part of cultural life in Harburg's city center. “It is our goal to promote lively neighborhoods and strengthen social cohesion in Hamburg,” says Carstensen.

With all of these developments, we can look forward to the reopening in spring 2026! With its modern facilities and new usage options, the Harburg community center will hopefully be an attraction for everyone interested in culture. If you would like to take a look at the renovation progress for yourself, you should keep your eyes open and keep an eye on the local offers, because this investment is more than just money - it is an investment in the future of culture in Harburg.
