For World Breastfeeding Week, the Harburg district is launching an initiative for breastfeeding-friendly places to offer parents support.

Breastfeeding-friendly places in the Harburg district: Initiative starts for World Breastfeeding Week!
In the coming days everything in the Harburg district will revolve around breastfeeding. A new initiative is setting an example: “Breastfeeding-friendly places” are intended to show parents where they can breastfeed or feed their babies in peace. The occasion is the upcoming World Breastfeeding Week, which takes place from September 29th to October 5th. The “Breastfeeding-friendly communities in the Harburg district” campaign starts during World Breastfeeding Week and is initiated by the Health Department. Dr. Esther Neuschulz emphasizes the important role of breastfeeding for a healthy start in life and calls on cafés, shops, town halls and church communities to join the initiative.
A special logo will be developed to identify the breastfeeding friendly places. This logo will be clearly visible on the doors and windows of public institutions and shops. It also includes a bottle symbol that appeals not only to breastfeeding mothers, but also to fathers and other caregivers who cannot breastfeed. The initiative is coordinated in collaboration with the district’s “Early Help” network. Anyone interested can contact Alina Kibbel on 04171 – 693 1571 or by email at a.kibbel@lkharburg.de to become part of this important initiative.
World Breastfeeding Week 2023: An important call
The motto of World Breastfeeding Week is “You decide. Not the advertising.” The aim of this week is to make mothers and expectant fathers aware of their right to make informed and independent decisions. Information is also provided about the legal basis and protective mechanisms that promote responsible breastfeeding. This includes the WHO code and the EU regulation, which are intended to help protect the rights of breastfeeding mothers and protect them from commercial influences.
Particular attention is paid to healthcare professionals, who should receive support and suggestions in order to position themselves against the advertising influences of manufacturers and social media. This week calls for active reporting of violations of the EU regulation to food monitoring. This is the only way to promote a fair and honest information policy on the subject of breastfeeding that meets the needs of parents.
At a time when there is a lot of information on breastfeeding and formula on the market, it makes sense to rely on independent and informed decisions. The coming week will be an important opportunity to raise awareness and celebrate the central role of breastfeeding.
