BR Volleys celebrate a clear 3-0 win in Hildesheim – Flexen shines!
The atmosphere in the Sparkasse Arena Hildesheim was electric when the BR Volleys played against the Helios Grizzlys Giesen yesterday. With a clear 3-0 win (25:20, 25:20, 25:18), the Berlin volleyball players achieved another convincing performance. Around 2,470 spectators provided an impressive setting and cheered on their team as much as they could, which visibly motivated the players.
From the start, coach Joel Banks' team was ready to demonstrate their dominance. The game started with a successful in-out challenge from Joel Banks, which gave the BR Volleys their first plus point on the way to victory. In the first set, the players showed their skills and scored five aces, which spoke of a strong opening phase. Although the Grizzlys initially led 7:5, the volleys were not disturbed and quickly got back into the game.
Strong team game
In the second set, the blocking presence of the volleys was particularly notable. Moritz Reichert and Nehemiah Mote blocked successfully and contributed significantly to the Grizzlys being able to score fewer points. Nolan Flexen was the top scorer of the game with a total of 14 points, including three aces. “It was a special match for me,” explained Fedor Ivanov after the game, recalling the special brotherly duel against his brother Ilya, who also played in the game.
The coach was also satisfied with the Grizzlys' higher error rate in the second set and the strong serve and attack performance from the volleys: "The support of the fans and our dominance were the key to this success," said Joel Banks after the game and was already looking ahead to the next challenges. Finally, TSV Herrsching II will be in the cup on November 8th and SVG Lüneburg on November 12th.
Volleyball on the rise
Yesterday's game is part of an impressive development in volleyball in Germany. According to the German Volleyball Association, it had around 436,000 members in 2024. The popularity of the sport is continually growing – both in leisure and competitive sports. While the men's Bundesliga averages 1,458 spectators per game, the women's league has an average audience of 1,623.
These numbers not only reflect the good work of the associations, but also show the development of new talent, as over 100,000 students took part in the “Youth training for the Olympics” competition in volleyball in the 2023/24 school year. Another sign of the upswing is the qualification of the German men's national team for the 2024 Olympic Games - for the first time since 2012.
With this positive development and the strong performances of the BR Volleys, it remains to be seen how the upcoming games will turn out and whether a further step towards success is possible.
