Thunderstorm warning for Hildesheim: Danger to life due to lightning and heavy rain!

The weather situation in the Hildesheim district is getting worse: The German Weather Service (DWD) issued an official warning of strong thunderstorms on Sunday evening. The warning is in effect today, June 22, 2025, from 10:30 p.m. to midnight. During this time, gusts of wind with speeds of up to 70 km/h, heavy rain of around 15 liters per square meter per hour and hail can be expected. The meteorological conditions indicate a dynamic development of the thunderstorm cells, which means that the situation can change quickly. Therefore, caution is advised!

The danger situation is serious: lightning strikes can pose a significant threat to life. Falling branches and flying objects also pose a high risk. Drivers should adapt their speed to the weather conditions and avoid flooded road sections. Particular caution is required near trees or bodies of water.

DWD recommendations

The DWD recommends avoiding spending time outdoors and seeking shelter indoors. Loose items outside should be secured to prevent damage from the approaching storms. The warning highlights the importance of always keeping yourself informed about current weather conditions. Corresponding updates are available via the DWD's digital channels, radio and warning apps.

According to the current weather report from the DWD, a lively westerly current is moving across the country, caused by a low over the Norwegian Sea. The combination of warm to very warm air gives hope for strong thunderstorms, which will also spread into central and southern Germany on Monday night. Over the course of the night, up to 25 liters of rain per square meter could fall locally, accompanied by hail and squalls with speeds of up to 85 km/h.

Forecast and further developments

The current severe weather situation is also recommended for the coming days. Strong thunderstorms with heavy rain of up to 30 liters per square meter and heavy squalls are expected on Monday, especially in the southeast. The unchanged warm air contributes to the intensity of the thunderstorms. According to the DWD, the next update of the management report will be made no later than Monday, June 23, 2025, at 5:00 a.m.

The thunderstorm warning levels make it clear that the situation must be taken seriously. Level 2 means that warnings are issued for severe thunderstorms with squalls or heavy rain, while warning levels beyond this indicate very strong thunderstorms with hail or hurricane-like gusts.

People in the Hildesheim district and beyond are well advised to stay alert and take the appropriate safety precautions to get through this stormy period safely. Stay informed and act wisely!
