Heat wave approaching: 39 degrees threaten Lower Saxony, health warning!

The upcoming heat wave will bring temperatures across Germany, including Lower Saxony, that will make us sweat. On Wednesday, June 29th, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) expects highs between 37 and 39 degrees, with the highest values expected in cities such as Hanover and Braunschweig in particular. Even Hamburg will not be spared with temperatures reaching 37 degrees, and the forecasts show that the hottest week of the year is just around the corner. On Monday we were able to look forward to a pleasant 21 to 30 degrees, but from Tuesday things really get going, with lots of sunshine and temperatures that will reach up to 36 degrees. Hopefully there will be a little cooling off from Thursday, the temperatures should fall back into the bearable range between 16 and 22 degrees, accompanied by showers and thunderstorms.

But with all the sun and heat, caution is also advised. It is not without reason that the DWD issued heat warnings. These warnings apply not only to daytime heat, but also take into account nighttime temperatures, which can also be high. The heat warning system shows that heat stress poses a serious health risk. Older people and people with previous illnesses such as cardiovascular, kidney or lung diseases are particularly at risk and should pay particular attention to their health on hot days. Numerous measures, such as drinking 2 to 3 liters of water per day and avoiding physical exertion during the midday heat, are of great importance in order to be well prepared for the hot days.

Health effects of heat

Heat is not only uncomfortable, it can also have fatal consequences. According to zdfheute, around 9,100 people died in Germany in the summer of 2022 due to extreme temperatures. Shockingly, this number exceeded deaths caused by traffic accidents and drug use combined. The health system is overstretched by such heat waves, which leads to increasing cases of illness and more calls for emergency services.

Older people are particularly at risk because their ability to adapt to high temperatures is increasingly weakening. They're not the only ones who should be careful: people on certain medications that disrupt thermoregulation also need to be vigilant. Cognitive limitations and the lack of social contacts increase the risk of not noticing and acting on heat waves in a timely manner.

Prevention measures

In preparation for this heat period, some cities, such as Osnabrück, have already drawn up heat protection plans to protect citizens. This is particularly important because you should also pay attention to the dangers at swimming lakes, as the German Life Saving Society recommends. So stay informed and remember: Even without warnings, sensitive people in particular should pay attention to their fluid balance.

To get through the heat wave healthy, here are a few useful tips:

  • Regelmäßig trinken (2-3 Liter pro Tag).
  • Körperliche Anstrengungen während der heißen Tageszeit vermeiden.
  • Abkühlung durch lauwarmes Duschen, feuchte Tücher oder kühlende Fußbäder.
  • Leichte, atmungsaktive Kleidung tragen und direkte Sonneneinstrahlung meiden.

So take good care of yourself and those around you, especially those who may no longer be as mobile or need additional support. In times like these, it is particularly important that we look after each other together.
