This commitment is due to funding from the Lower Saxony Path meadow bird protection program, which aims to take targeted measures to protect threatened species in the region, e.g. the corncrake and the whinchat, which are particularly native here. Loud Leinetal24 Barthel will play a central role in passing on information about breeding season changes to farmers.
What exactly will that look like? Barthel will not only protect clutches and chicks, but also mediate between the Lower Nature Conservation Authority and the local managers. An important concern is the territory mapping of the bird species mentioned as a basis for effective protective measures. This is to ensure that the needs of the birds and agricultural practices are balanced. Managers have the option of contacting Barthel directly by email wiesenvogelschutz@landkreis-northeim.de or call 05551/708-139 for support.
Focus on meadow bird protection program
The meadow bird protection program is a sophisticated concept that is aimed at planners, specialist administrations and agricultural practice in order to create suitable solutions for the protection of meadow birds. It requires a mix of different measures and intensive area support to ensure sustainable success. Lower Saxony describes the need for different strategies, including adapted use during the breeding season, measures to improve habitats and structured predation management.
- Wassermanagement
- Etablierung von Extensivgrünland
- Flächenbewirtschaftung
- Offenhaltung der Landschaft
- Integriertes Prädationsmanagement
- Spezifischer Schutz für Wachtelkönig und Braunkehlchen
The aim of these measures is to secure habitats and promote biodiversity. Supplementary building block sheets, which are available as compact compilations, provide detailed information and can be accessed online.
The Lower Saxony way in practice
Particular attention is paid to the aspect of collaboration: Lower Saxony exists sets out a clear line that agricultural businesses can benefit from both voluntary measures and government support in implementing protective measures. These framework conditions are intended to provide an incentive to show consideration for nature and at the same time work in an economically sensible manner.
The funding guidelines for meadow bird protection should be available for the 2024 breeding season and are another example of how the dialogue between nature conservation and agriculture can be promoted. Ultimately, it is up to all actors to overcome the challenges together and to preserve and promote not only the meadow birds, but the entire biodiversity of the region.
