Wildeshauser outdoor pool: opening on August 30th – progress and challenges

The long wait will soon be over. After extensive renovation work, the Wildeshauser outdoor pool will finally reopen on August 30, 2025 District newspaper reported. The city can look forward to a new era for the pool, even if the current construction progress still leaves room for improvement.

The last interim status was in June: the swimmers' and non-swimmers' pools are currently being filled and the long-awaited wide-wave slide is about to be installed. A tent has been installed for the little ones to carry out the tile laying process regardless of the weather. But construction progress is difficult to assess because much work is still outstanding. The area around the loungers and the food truck are still on the to-do list.

Constant progress, high expectations

As the City of Wildeshausen announced that the total costs of the renovation have now been estimated at 6.2 million euros. The city is contributing 3.29 million euros itself, while the federal government is supporting 2.4 million euros. In addition to the new concept, the diving pool will also be more advanced; The water is already bubbling here and the diving boards with one and three meter boards have been installed.

The overhaul of the outdoor pool was long overdue, as the non-swimmer and toddler pools had been out of operation since 2019. The groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation took place in late summer 2023, after intensive discussions in politics and with citizens. At 963 square meters, the new total water area will be smaller than before, but still offers plenty of space for fun and relaxation. The diving pool measures 135 square meters, while the 50 m combination pool with five 25 m lanes and different water depths will delight swimmers.

Family friendly attractions

Particular attention is paid to accessibility. The new comfort entry is intended to make bathing easier for older people and people with disabilities. In addition, the “Sprayground” water playground with various floor nozzles will be an attraction for little visitors. A food truck area on the west side ensures snacks and refreshments are provided - and not just for the swimmers!

Despite the anticipation of the opening, the outdoor pool operation is facing challenges. Many outdoor swimming pools in Germany are struggling with the need for renovation due to the old age of their facilities. According to a survey by the DGfdB, over 2,400 outdoor swimming pools need to be comprehensively renovated, while the operators often have to struggle with financial hurdles. The shortage of skilled workers also plays a major role, which means that many outdoor swimming pools still have to operate with limited opening hours, like the one PBR reported.

The Wildeshauser outdoor pool has the chance to become a new attraction in these challenging times. There is still a lot to do before the opening in August, but citizens and swimming fans can be optimistic that the 2025 swimming season will celebrate a successful comeback with a new, modern outdoor pool.
