Belgium is threatened with its climate target: emissions must fall twice as quickly!
On November 3, 2025, a study shows that Belgium's CO2 emissions are falling too slowly. Learn how agriculture and consumption influence.

Belgium is threatened with its climate target: emissions must fall twice as quickly!
The issue of environmental protection is becoming increasingly important in Belgium, but progress in reducing CO₂ emissions remains below expectations. According to the current transition barometer from SPF Santé publique, Belgium needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions twice as fast as it currently does. Emissions have fallen by 31% since 1990, but the decline of just 1% per year is considered insufficient. In 2023, the carbon footprint per capita in Belgium is estimated to be between 10 and 15 tonnes of CO₂, which overall remains stable compared to 35 years ago.
However, over the years the carbon footprint has increased, even with a growing population. The main cause of emissions are households, which have a major influence in areas such as mobility, consumer goods, housing and nutrition. Measures to reduce the carbon footprint include reducing the consumption of emissions-intensive goods, extending product life, as well as repairing, reusing and using recycled materials.
The role of agriculture
Agriculture currently contributes 11% of Belgium's total emissions, with a reduction of around 22% since 1990. However, the reduction over the last decade is only a drop in the ocean. The majority of agricultural emissions, about 54%, come from livestock, specifically methane. In addition, fertilizer application and energy consumption, each accounting for 23% of emissions, cannot be neglected either. To achieve climate neutrality by 2050, agricultural emissions would have to be reduced by at least 40% compared to 2023.
The innovative approach of the “Blanc bleu vert” project focuses on improving the carbon balance in beef production by specifically optimizing methane emissions and feeding grazing animals. Climate-friendly agricultural practices, such as the use of organic fertilizers and soil cover to sequester CO₂, are also increasingly being implemented.
Challenges on the way to climate neutrality
Despite these measures, local marketing of food remains an important approach to minimize transport. Nevertheless, the sector's efforts to date show that the goals set for climate neutrality in 2050 are largely inadequately implemented.
