Traditional shop Schuhhaus Hundt in Peine causes sadness among fans
The Hundt shoe store in Peine, the city's proudest tradition, is about to expire. After more than 230 years, the region's oldest family business will be closing at the end of the year. The official clearance sale began on June 26th and runs until the end of the year, a last chance for Cologne residents to stock up on a pretty special bargain. Nicole Wiedera, who has managed the business since 2015, has continued the traditional name together with her daughter Mandy, who later came on board. But after ten years it will be over because Mandy has decided not to continue the legacy.
Nicole Wiedera explains that in addition to the economic situation, the massive influence of online trading also led to the closure. The challenges for many local shops are noticeable and do not stop at the shoe store. Finding a successor is one last hope of preserving the business. Meanwhile, a permanent employee and several part-time employees are already looking for new career prospects.
Truck parking spaces are in short supply
This situation forces many truck drivers to divert to urban areas, which is sometimes done illegally. The city is under pressure to find solutions to address this challenge, especially given the constant traffic congestion.
