Experience bronze casting up close: Workshop in the Schwedenspeicher Stade Museum!
The Hanseatic city of Stade is bustling - and not just in the building structure! The Sweden Warehouse Museum invites young and old to a very special workshop. On two dates, June 28th and July 19th, those interested can cast a bronze piece of jewelry themselves between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. This is an exciting opportunity in which participants can not only express their creativity, but also immerse themselves in the millennia-old art of bronze casting.
More than 5,000 years ago, the invention of bronze casting revolutionized the production of ceremonial objects. People began making beautiful jewelry for their own use and religious ceremonies, at a time when faith and everyday life were closely intertwined. The cult of the sun being drawn across the sky by a ship was just one facet of this era. Impressive exhibits such as shiny gold dress brooches, arm rings and weapons from this period can be admired in the Schwedenspeicher Museum.
Workshop details
The workshop is a real experience: First you go on a shared tour of the exhibition, followed by shaping with wax and clay. Finally, participants are allowed to pour molten bronze into their prepared molds. The material costs are already included for just 20 euros. Participation is possible from the age of 16; previous knowledge is not necessary, but is recommended. If you are interested, you can easily contact us by email buchung@museen-stade.de or register by phone on 04141 7977350.
The workshop is part of an FSJ project and is kindly supported by the Sparkassenstiftung and the volunteer services. If you would like to visit the museum, you will find it in the historic center of Stade on Hansestrasse - just a stone's throw away from the city harbor, where parking is also available.
Insight into the history of bronze casting
What makes casting bronze so special? This art goes back to the Neolithic, where the first evidence of cast copper in Central Europe can be found through crucible finds in Switzerland. The alloy of copper and tin used for bronze casting allows the creation of a wide variety of products, from jewelry to tools to statues. The reusability of the metal is another plus because it can be melted down again and again.
Bronze casting has retained its importance to this day, especially for artists who use this technique to create their works. The Lost wax casting process, which involves creating a wax model that is later replaced by bronze, is one of the traditional methods in art production. So anyone who has always wanted to try out the casting craft has the perfect chance at the Schwedenspeicher Museum.
The coziness of Stade and the opportunity to create a piece of history make this workshop a must-do for anyone interested in art and history. Pack up your creativity and get to the bronze!
