Art from another world: Jochen Schimmelpenninck in Stade
The art scene in Stade is currently showing its most exciting side. The exhibition by Jochen Schimmelpenninck will open in the Hahnentor Gallery from November 9, 2025, entitled “Finds of an Artificial Archeology”. With his work, the artist takes visitors into a world full of secrets and questions. Objects he calls “palimpsests” come from “another world” and an unknown time, creating a fascinating play of uncertainty.
The objects on display appear out of time and their shape is reminiscent of ceramic fragments from a coral reef, which Schimmelpenninck processed into artistic assemblages. Presented in restored old frames or on stylish pedestals, looking at the works creates the impression of a dystopian future or even a mystical underwater world. The artist himself describes his objects as part of an “excavation landscape”, which he also thematizes in large-format oil and acrylic paintings. These works, which form part of his extensive creative history, show his fascination with Etruscan archeology, which he discovered during his stay in Italy, where he lived near an archaeological site.
Details about the exhibition
The opening will take place on November 9, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. in the Hahnentor Gallery, Bei der Börne 1, 21680 Stade. The exhibition can be seen until December 6, 2025. The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The works not only offer a glimpse into the artist's creativity, but also invite us to reflect on our own relationship to the past and future.
Jochen Schimmelpenninck, originally from Varel in Friesland, was distinguished by his classical art training at the Academy of Fine Arts and has further honed his skills in cities such as Düsseldorf, Berlin and New York. After teaching at the University of Applied Arts in Cairo and the Academy of Design in Cologne, he finally dedicated himself to creating his idiosyncratic works of art, which can now be admired in Stade.
