CDU nominates Heiko Blume: District election for Uelzen planned for 2026!

The CDU is ready for the upcoming district election, with a clear nomination: Heiko Blume will be nominated as a candidate for the district election in September 2026. At the assembly meeting in Ostedt, the doctor of law received 87 out of 90 votes. Blume already has 14 years of experience as a district administrator and is now aiming for his third term in office, which this time will last eight years az-online.de reported.

In June 2024, Blume had already declared his willingness to run again. On this occasion, he emphasized that integrity, reliability and commitment were the hallmarks with which he would like to go into the election. Currently, only Léonard Hyfing from the UWG parliamentary group has declared his candidacy, which makes Blume's situation appear quite advantageous.

Important topics for the district

When nominating him, Blume mentioned a few key points that are particularly important to him for the district. These include the expansion of fiber optics, marketing of skilled workers, educational policy, the promotion of volunteer work and secure medical care in rural areas. The nature conservation foundation and civil defense are also on his agenda. However, he considers the target of four percent renewable energy for the district to be overly ambitious.

Blume also receives support from David McAllister, the MEP and former Prime Minister of Lower Saxony. In his opening speech, McAllister spoke about the challenges facing the EU. Jörg Hillmer, chairman of the Uelzen district association, was optimistic about the CDU's chances in the 2026 local elections. He referred to the CDU's essential role for rural areas and the financing of the Autobahn 39 and the Hamburg-Hannover rail connection. Hillmer also warned of possible financial losses in the district if the red-green state government's plans were implemented.

Political mood in Lower Saxony

As the latest surveys show, the political mood in Lower Saxony is tense. The CDU therefore has a decisive role: it has 32 percent of the vote and is therefore the strongest force Statista holds on. For comparison, the SPD received 33.4 percent in the last state election in October 2022, making it the strongest force.

Dissatisfaction with the current red-green state government is increasing: 65 percent of those surveyed rate the economic situation as less good or bad. Another focus is on the challenges that the Volkswagen Group is currently experiencing, which for many respondents appears to be the more important social problem. Satisfaction with Prime Minister Stephan Weil has also fallen to 59 percent.

Overall, it shows that the CDU, with Heiko Blume at the helm, is well positioned to contest strong elections in September 2026. The course has been set – it now remains to be seen how the political landscape will develop by then.
