Fraudster arrested in Coburg: shock call with consequences!

The police in Cloppenburg/Vechta are on the verge of an important breakthrough in solving a shocking call that occurred in February of this year. A 35-year-old suspect, who is said to be active in several fraud cases, was recently arrested in Coburg. The incident in Neuenkirchen-Vörden was directed against an 86-year-old woman who was informed on the phone about her daughter's alleged plight. She was said to need urgent medical attention, which legitimized the shocking call. NWZonline reports that The police immediately began an investigation when the incident became known.

The scam used by scammers is perfidious and has gained popularity in recent months. Time and again, perpetrators pose as relatives who are in distress. It is often suggested that a relative has had a serious accident or is involved in a legal mess and urgently needs financial help, as the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) mentions in a warning. The BKA warns of these shock calls, in which victims are increasingly put under pressure to act quickly without thinking.

Another incident with a similar pattern

On February 19, 2025, two days after the shock call in Neuenkirchen-Vörden, a similar incident occurred again in the Coburg area. Here, a 71-year-old woman was the target of a shocking call. Thanks to quick investigations, the person suspected of collecting the money, also a 35-year-old suspect, was caught on the same day. News.de reports of a total of five further crimes in several federal states that could be attributed to the suspects.

The total amount of damage caused by these frauds amounts to almost 100,000 euros, although only the cash seized in Coburg could be recovered. The police are currently investigating several cases of gang and commercial fraud against the arrested woman, who is currently in custody.

How to protect yourself

Unfortunately, the affected seniors are not alone in these experiences. Shock calls are a well-organized scam, and the BKA has clear advice for the population in this regard. People should not allow themselves to be put under pressure, should never reveal personal or financial details over the phone and should hang up if in doubt. If someone receives such calls, it is advisable to contact the local police station or call relatives at known numbers.

It is all the more important that older people are informed about this danger and know how to respond to such calls. Ultimately, no strangers should be allowed into your own four walls or money should be handed over without consultation.

The constant warnings and educational campaigns by the police and the BKA are therefore crucial to protect citizens from these criminal activities.
