There is news in the world of basketball that is a breath of fresh air! The Fitness First Würzburg Baskets have landed a new player: Ryan Schwieger. The 26-year-old American is moving back to Germany from Juventus Utena in Lithuania and will initially strengthen the team for two months. Würzburg Baskets reports that Schwieger has considerable experience in Germany and was most recently active at RASTA Vechta.
His meteoric rise on the basketball scene is no surprise. In the past three years, Schwieger has achieved great things with Vechta: He was part of the team that won the ProA championship in the 2022/2023 season and celebrated promotion back to the easyCredit BBL. In the 2023/2024 BBL season, he averaged 10.7 points per game with an impressive three-point percentage of 41 percent.
Experience on the floor
The newcomer already gave an impressive performance in his best game when he scored 16 points in 28 minutes against the Würzburg Baskets in April 2024. However, last season he was plagued by injuries and was only able to play four of 40 competitive games for Vechta. He previously also wore the Juventus Utena jersey in Lithuania. There the team currently reached seventh place in the league and had to admit defeat against Murcia in the semi-finals of the BCL qualification. Schwieger played in five games in which he scored an average of 4.6 points and had an impressive three-point percentage of 56 percent.
Sports director Kresimir Loncar was enthusiastic about the signing and sees great potential in Schwieger. The player himself also paid respect to the club and the coaching staff of the Würzburg Baskets. This positive dynamic could be crucial for the upcoming games!
A look forward
An exciting time lies ahead for Schwieger in Würzburg. His return to Germany and the move to the Würzburg Arena is a new phase in his career - and both sides seem to expect a lot from this collaboration. Now we can only hope that he brings the potential he has within him onto the floor!
