Stoppelmarkt in Vechta: A festival of hope and tradition!
Committed to tradition, the Stoppelmarkt in Vechta will enchant its visitors again this year. Around 400 believers gathered for the solemn service, which was celebrated by showman pastor Sascha Ellinghaus in Kühling's Lower Saxony tent. As part of the “Holy Year” 2025, which is celebrated every 25 years by the Roman Catholic Church, the motto “Pilgrim of Hope” took center stage.
For many visitors, the Stoppelmarkt brings joy and hope, in keeping with the words of Ellinghaus, who highlighted the showmen as bearers of hope. The Vechta Kolping Orchestra provided musical support for the service and created a festive atmosphere.
Tradition and community
But the stubble market has much more to offer! A traditional football tournament between showmen and innkeepers achieved record proceeds of 21,056 euros, half of which will be donated to the “Athletes Against Hunger” campaign and to the Xia-Gibbs self-help association. Such initiatives show the social cohesion of the community and the big heart of those involved.
Particularly noteworthy is Johanna Beyer, who at 101 is the oldest visitor to the market. She was honored on the occasion with a gingerbread heart from Mayor Kristian Kater and the traditional figures Jan and Libett. Such moments underline the family atmosphere that characterizes the Stoppelmarkt.
A full program for all visitors
Over 700 seniors enjoyed the food and drinks offered at the city of Vechta's seniors' coffee, which is an important part of the program. On Monday, August 18th, there will be a reception at 11 a.m. in the Niedersachsenhalle with Prime Minister Olaf Lies as guest of honor. At the same time, an animal show is planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the horse and livestock market area, which will pay particular attention to animal welfare. On Tuesday, August 19th, Family Day is on the agenda, where reduced prices will provide relief for families.
The Stoppelmarkt ends on Tuesday at 10 p.m. with a large fireworks display, which offers visitors a grand finale. The market is a place of encounter, celebration and tradition that is very popular in Vechta and has a permanent place in people's hearts.
