Cathedral Festival in Verden: Hairstyle team is urgently looking for reinforcements!
Preparations for the Cathedral Festival in Verden are in full swing and are bringing a breath of fresh air to the stage. The focus is particularly on the impressive production of “The Match Woman”, in which Ilenia Marstaller shines as a make-up artist not only behind the scenes, but also on stage. Her creative streak is already evident in her training at the vocational school for cosmetics and make-up in Bremen. In 2017, she took the plunge into the world of the cathedral festival after landing an internship. Since then she has been able to gain a lot of experience on film sets and on theater stages. In 2022 she took over responsibility for the make-up of over 80 actors and took on the role of the bishop's mistress herself.
This season she will be on stage again and will bring a small singing performance. Her passion for make-up is evident not only in the application, but also in the artistic direction of the entire make-up work. Together with director Hans König and costume designer Christin Bokelmann, she designs the masks and has a good knack for putting the actors in the right light. She also documents the make-up process in the form of photos during rehearsals to keep the team up to date.
A strong team for big challenges
The mask and hairstyle workshop, coordinated by Susanne Fricke, is an important part of the production. Under her leadership, the team works to ensure everything runs smoothly. Anke and Carolin Cordes, both experienced make-up artists, support the project with their know-how. Carolin Cordes particularly enjoys working in the theater, while Anke Cordes has been part of the team since 2022. However, there is currently an incident as an employee of the hairstyle team is unavailable due to illness. We are therefore urgently looking for reinforcements.
The make-up work requires a good amount of planning. The team must be active up to four hours before the performance to accommodate all needs. Interestingly, only about half of the actors wear make-up in order to act with the help of the two-class society in the play. The costumes of the working class people are kept in simple shades of gray, while the hairstyles of the bourgeoisie women are lush and elaborate. Here it becomes clear how important stage make-up is for the portrayal of characters and the atmosphere in the play.
A look at the world of theater make-up
Stage make-up is an art in itself. If you would like to learn more about the different approaches and techniques, you will find numerous resources and instructions. For example, there are step-by-step instructions for applying stage makeup that are suitable for both beginners and advanced users. The companies offer everything makeup artists need for their work: from basic and specialized makeup to special effects. Make-up art is therefore an exciting discipline that is very popular not only in the theater, but also at events such as carnival and Halloween.
The Cathedral Festival will therefore not only be a celebration of art, but also a showcase for the talent and creativity of the people behind the stage. Every brush stroke and every hairstyle tells its own story. The audience has no choice but to wait eagerly for the premiere and let themselves be carried away by the magic of the theater.
