New dike in Hönisch: flood protection for more safety!

Something is happening in Hönisch: a new dike structure is being built here that will protect the region from flooding in the future. The old dike was regularly vulnerable, often had to be refortified and offered little protection in flood situations, which unnecessarily increased the number of personnel required for improvements. After intensive planning, the new dike is scheduled to be completed in late summer 2025. The work is commissioned by the Stedorfer Deichverband and by NLWKN accompanied in Verden.

The new dike will be strategically relocated to the federal highway in order to also protect the road body. The gap of around 530 meters between the existing dike and the newly built dike is currently being closed. Last year, a 670 meter dike was completed along the K14 and B215. These measures are intended to ensure that emergency services can react more quickly in the event of flooding. The encounter between precipitation and backing up groundwater was unfavorable with the old dike: its angular structure was not suitable for such extreme cases.

Modern security measures

To secure the embankment, special foils were used and big packs filled with sand were installed on the cycle path. The removal of the topsoil for the new dike route began as early as May 2025, with two seepage shafts being installed for surface drainage. The total construction costs amount to around 870,000 euros, financed with state funds.

The safety standards in Lower Saxony when it comes to coastal protection are high: Loud NLWKN There are a total of over 1000 kilometers of dikes in Lower Saxony. In addition, the state government invests over 60 million euros annually in coastal protection to prepare for the challenges posed by climate change.

The challenges are growing

The current climate crisis poses major challenges for those responsible. During a turbulent storm surge season last year, it became clear that the demands on coastal protection are constantly increasing. Over 1.1 million people on the Lower Saxony coast are directly affected. In a press release, Environment Minister Christian Meyer pointed out the need to invest in coastal protection projects. In total, over 80 million euros will be made available for coastal protection measures in 2024 to meet increasing requirements. In the future, a dike increase of 100 centimeters would be required to withstand the challenges of climate change, while the IPCC forecasts a sea level rise of between 60 and 110 cm by the end of the century.

Contemporary witnesses always fondly remember the flood of the century in 1946, when the flood waters at the Hönischer junction were head-high. Thanks to the modern measures now planned, such a scenario will hopefully be a thing of the past. While many measures are already being specifically planned, it remains crucial that the public remains informed and actively participates in the progress. Current water levels can be accessed via the NLWKN website and provide valuable information for all affected citizens.

However, the measures in Hönisch are not the only ones. Extensive coastal protection projects are also planned in other places in Lower Saxony in order to continue to be well protected in the future. Only together is it possible to tackle the challenges of climate change - and in Hönisch we set a good example!
