Verden social department store remains independent: Volunteers now wanted!

The social department store in Verden remains independent of Awo and thus functions as an integral part of the local community. The department store attracts customers from the surrounding area, including Bremerhaven and Nienburg, and not only offers a point of contact for people in need. Lavinia Lorent-Adam, the manager of the social department store, emphasizes that everyone is welcome, regardless of their financial situation. The team is urgently looking for more volunteers and new club members to continue to run the department store successfully and possibly even expand it.

The recently founded Verden social club currently has 44 members. This was created to prevent the department store from closing due to financial difficulties. Following on from other social department stores that have grown significantly in recent years – such as the “Marktplatz der Treffen” in Bremen, which is already operating at its limits – there is also a growing demand for cheap, sustainably offered goods here.

Support for the department store

The department store employs around 20 volunteers who are flexible in their schedule. “We are looking for volunteers who have a good knack for sales and customer advice,” explains Lorent-Adam. This support includes activities such as donation collection, sorting and sales. Volunteers can advance the company, especially with professional experience and social skills.According to a survey, social department stores not only promote the aspect of reuse, but also enable people to come together and socialize in a social context.

The department store also requires that donations be dropped off during opening hours and not left on the doorstep. At the moment, jackets, shoes and other clothing as well as household goods are in particular urgent need. Keyword donations: Summer clothing will not be accepted until next year because the warehouse is already full with winter clothing.

Membership in the social club

Anyone who is interested can join the social club. The membership fee is only 2.50 euros per month. In addition, we are looking for a tax advisor who does not have to work on a voluntary basis in order to be able to support the association professionally in financial matters.

Lorent-Adam is also planning to open a new store that will sell furniture and tableware. Two possible locations have already been considered, but it will wait until the end of the year before final decisions are made.

For further information or to get involved in the department store, the department store and the social club can be reached by telephone at 04231/9566214 or by email. Opening hours are Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. - ideal for stopping by and doing a good deal.
