accident statistics in view

The shock reactions on the accident in Delmenhorst are not unfounded because the numbers of e-scooter accidents are increasing, and massive. In 2023, a total of 9,425 accidents with e-scooters were documented in Germany, which corresponds to an increase of 14.1 % compared to the previous year. The number of fatalities has even doubled: from 11 to 22. Again and again it can be seen that the most common causes of accidents are false road usage and the influence of alcohol. Around 83 % of the injured were on the e-scooters themselves-no wonder that more and more voices are being loud that are pleading for a stricter regulation of e-scooter use.

As far as the causes of the accident are concerned, it should also be noted that 41.6 % of those affected were younger than 25 years. The majority of accidents happened in large cities, and the increase in e-scooter users is inevitably associated with the increase in the number of accidents. As a result, the police in this area remain particularly attentive. So it is not surprising that e-scooters are increasingly becoming the field of view of the security authorities.

safe use under the magnifying glass

Against the background of these alarming statistics it becomes clear how important it is to use e-scooters. The legal requirements stipulate that users must be at least 14 years old and that they are not allowed to consume alcohol under certain conditions. But here it turns out that many accidents happen through travelers who do not adhere to these rules. In 2023 there were 151 accidents that took place under the influence of alcohol or drugs, only slightly less than in the previous year.

The increase in e-scooter users, paired with increasing number of accidents, creates a worrying picture for traffic safety. It remains to be seen how the situation develops and what measures are taken to protect users and pedestrians.
