Ernie, the charismatic: new star in the Wilhelmshaven aquarium!
The coastal town of Wilhelmshaven has a new protégé who has quickly become the star of the aquarium. The green sea turtle Ernie has recently started living in the aquarium's waters, and it seems as if the 23-year-old animal has not only simply arrived after his move from the Sea Life aquarium in Scheveningen, the Netherlands, but has immediately become the "boss in the ring". Aquarium manager Kai Czepa describes Ernie as an imposing figure weighing almost 100 kilograms and having a shell length of 95 centimeters. This makes it one of the older representatives of its species in the aquarium, which can live up to 70 years.
What makes Ernie so special? He swims fearlessly in the large shark tank and enjoys his space while the other animals respectfully swim out of his way. This leads to a harmonious coexistence, without food disputes with the fish-eating sharks and rays. According to his taste, he is treated to lettuce and occasionally his favorite food, broccoli - even though aquarium manager Czepa points out that broccoli is not often on the menu because of its high calorie count.
A call to protect the seas
But there is more to Ernie than just an impressive animal in the aquarium. With its stay in Wilhelmshaven, the aquarium would like to draw attention to the endangerment of sea turtles. This species faces significant threats. How on renovablesverdes summarized, six of the seven turtle species are threatened with extinction. The main threats include plastic pollution, fishing nets, animal hunting and climate change.
Targeted measures to protect the seas are therefore of great importance. It is reported that international protection measures in countries such as Mexico and the USA can show positive results, although the black market remains a major problem. However, everyone can do their part by reducing their plastic consumption and participating in beach cleanups to protect the habitats of these amazing animals.
Reconstruction in the Wilhelmshaven aquarium
The aquarium in Wilhelmshaven is also planning to upgrade its aquarium landscape. The renovation with mudflats and stone reefs has already begun and is scheduled to be completed by December 2025. During this time, Ernie, who will serve as a symbol of ocean conservation, will play a key role in educating aquarium visitors about the important issues of environmental conservation.
Through his charismatic nature and impressive demeanor, Ernie not only brings joy to visitors, but also an important message: Let us work together to ensure that the beauty and diversity of our seas are preserved. Considering the rapid decline in sea turtle populations, this is really something! Visitors can look forward to being part of this mission while admiring one of the aquarium's newest stars.
