Wilhelmshaven is upgrading: 2 new container cranes for more efficiency!
Current developments at the Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven (CTW) are bringing a breath of fresh air to the logistics scene in the northwest. Eurogate, as the operator of the terminal, has announced comprehensive plans affecting both infrastructure and human resources. When expanding the terminal, Eurogate is installing two new container gantry cranes that come from Bremerhaven and rise an incredible 45 meters in height. This will increase the total number of bridges at the CTW to twelve, which will increase handling efficiency enormously.
The new bridges enable up to 45 container movements per hour and are part of a strategy to optimize operations. In addition, five additional van carriers have already been ordered and will be ready for use from July 2026, increasing capacity by an impressive 20 percent. This is particularly important in light of the “Gemini cooperation” between Hapag Lloyd and Maersk Line, which starts at the beginning of 2025 and is intended to boost throughput figures at the CTW. This hub-and-spoke system not only offers new loading options, but also improves delivery reliability, which is essential for many logistics companies.
Investments in modern technology
A “mini terminal” is also to be built in the northern area of the CTW in order to test partially automated operation. The focus here is on the introduction of new technologies and the digitalization of central work processes. These innovation steps are necessary to meet the growing demands on logistics.
With the aim of further reducing short waiting times, Eurogate has announced that it will invest in materials and personnel. There are currently around 650 employees at the CTW, including almost 550 in the commercial sector. For the challenges ahead, hiring an additional 40 to 50 employees is being considered to prepare for 2026. The need for a solid workforce is undisputed, especially in view of the ambitious growth targets.
Hapag-Lloyd's commitment
Another important step in the development of the CTW is the participation of Hapag-Lloyd AG. The company has held 30 percent of the terminal's operations since 2023. This partnership underlines the strategic importance of Wilhelmshaven as a central European transshipment point that is to be positioned more strongly in international competition.
The numbers don't lie: This year the CTW exceeded the one million TEU mark in throughput. A real milestone that illustrates the performance of the terminal. Also the digital steps, such as the license agreements concluded with Addicks & Kreye Container Service GmbH for the use of the cloud-based depot solution operateMybox, show that people in Wilhelmshaven are ready to take new paths. This agreement is intended not only to increase efficiency, but also to improve transparency in processes - important factors for tomorrow's logistics.
The prospect of a dynamic future at CTW is promising. With solidly planned investments and innovative approaches, Eurogate is ideally equipped to further develop Wilhelmshaven as one of the leading transshipment points in Europe.
